Unisex toilets have been around for ages. I actually prefer going to those ones, because they're cleaner. I don't know what you got going in England, but I'm not looking at a dailymail article to find out.

My town has at least two unisex bathrooms that I am aware of. One is in a supermarket and the other is in the local library. Both get used by both sexes regularly (if the comings and goings is any indication).
