Default Average Tax Refunds Down 8.4 Percent As Angry Taxpayers Vent On Twitter

Many workers who had always gotten a refund find out they now owe the IRS.

Average tax refunds were down last week 8.4 percent for the first week of the tax season over the same time last year, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Dipping refunds are inflaming a growing army of taxpayers stunned by the consequences of the Trump administration’s tax law — and the effects of the partial government shutdown.

The average refund check paid out so far has been $1,865, down from $2,035 at the same point in 2018, according to IRS data. Low-income taxpayers often file early to pocket the money as soon as possible. Many taxpayers count on the refunds to make important payments, or spend the money on things like home repairs, a vacation or a car.

The IRS had estimated it would issue about 2.3 percent fewer refunds this year as a result of the changes in the federal tax law, according to Bloomberg. MSNBC reports that 30 million Americans will owe the IRS money this year — 3 million more than before Trump’s tax law.

“There are going to be a lot of unhappy people over the next month,” Edward Karl of the American Institute of CPAs told Politico. “Taxpayers want a large refund.” Some 71 percent of taxpayers received refunds last year worth about $3,000 on average, according to Karl.

Watching toothless hillbilly Trump voters complaining about Trump raising their taxes is a thing of beauty.

No. The IRS I presenting facts. They aren’t lying.

The talking point is idiots like you trying to claim that increased or decreased refunds is a true measure of tax liability

Only a liar or a financial illiterate would make such a foolish claim. I can’t rule out both for you, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt and let you choose one

    Idiot?

    Or

    Liar?

No he is not, the only thing he is implying is that a whole lot of American taxpayers to include Trump lemmings are going to be surprised this April when that tax refund they are used either isn't coming, it is drastically reduced, or they might even own tax

Regardless of the realities, it ain't going to help Republicans in 2020 attempt to see the Trump Tax Cut as an accomplishment of his Administration

It only makes sense doesn’t it?

Less money taken throughout the year = less of a refund

Either math is really hard for you guys or your TDS is so off the hook you can’t think straight

If you got a smaller tax return, it means you had more of your money that you earned throughout the entire year. If youy knew economics, you'd understand that the net present value is in your favor the smaller your return is. But you don't really get all that math stuff, do you?

Sure. When I was on a payroll, I declared more dependents in order to get as close to zero refund as possible. That's what most intelligent people do, but many know that they're giving the govt. an interest free loan by taking a larger refund when they file. They aren't capable of budgeting, and they like the lump sum.

Now...if everyone took home more per week as a result of withholding changes, that's one thing. If, as you say, math is your forte, then you should be able to explain to everyone why they didn't take home more during the week, and still paid in when they filed, or got a smaller return.

That's not what's happening. People are citing stupid voters who actually believed that trump was going to close the carried interest loophole, and raise taxes on the wealthy in order to give middle class taxpayers a break.

No, idiot. The taxpayers who couldn't figure out how to adjust their withholding are indeed the stupidest tax payers. Fuck off

So you're saying that a tax 'cut', required people to adjust withholding during the year, in order to get a tax savings? Yea...you're a real genius if there is a net loss in income.

Why wouldn't the govt. tell employers to inform employees of a necessary change to dependents claimed? Because the govt. didn't want people to realize that they're now taking home less/week?
