Default Democrats have a 2020 problem: Trump is good at elections

I post this not from a pro-Trump perspective but because Willie Brown knows politics and his column each week is a must read. It's just an interesting, or different, perspective to hear from a Democrat. (it doesn't mean he's right but Willie is a political sage)

Democrats have a 2020 problem: Trump is good at elections

Make no mistake, President Trump’s State of the Union address was the kickoff for his 2020 re-election campaign, and so far I’ve yet to see a Democrat who can beat him.

During the partial government shutdown over whether to fund Trump’s wall on the southern border, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested that the president deliver the annual address alone, from the Oval Office.

    I can see why.

Alone, Trump is a frump. In front of a crowd, he’s electric.

No matter what you think of Trump’s message, his delivery was impressive. He stayed on script and kept referring to everyday heroes in the gallery, thus forcing the Democrats to stand and cheer.

It was populist theater, where presence and impression trump content.

And the overnight polling after the speech showed that once again, he connected with voters, at least enough voters to make him a 2020 favorite.

You can’t say the same for the Democratic contenders. They all have impressive credentials, winning personalities and positive messages, but none displays the “people personality” that our media-savvy president has mastered.

Nearly four years ago, when Trump announced his candidacy for president, I said he had a winning hand. He still does.

So we Democrats really have our work cut out for us.

If he carefully picks his fights, Trump can turn the light back on Democrats and force us to defend our progressive wing’s “socialist” positions like health care for all, housing for all and guaranteed income.

Our candidates will have to pull further and further to the left to satisfy the party’s activist constituency, much like Republicans did in response to the rise of the Tea Party, and probably with the same results.

Our congressional efforts in 2018 benefited from Republican candidates’ inability to defend their relationship with Trump. But Trump can defend his relationship with himself very effectively.

Let’s just hope Democrats can figure out that we need to go beyond the left and motivate voters across the board, just as midterm congressional campaigns did under Nancy Pelosi’s leadership.

We know we can win California and New York. The question is: Can we win the states we lost in 2016, or do we preach to the choir in an empty church?

Running on open borders, bankrupting the country and killing babies doesn't sound like a winning strategy to me.

The donkeys are naking it easy to reelect him.
DJT just needs to spin off the litany of good things and then pull out the "are you better off than you were four years ago ?" Line.
    They have nothing for that.

The polling for his speech was 80% favorable and the Rasmussen poll following the speech shows that 50% favor President Trump and 49% do not.

It was a great speech and Americans saw that Democrats would not even stand to support his "America will never be a Socialist nation."

fwiw, the election is still two years away and a lot of economists have predicted we will be in a recession within the next two years so there's no guarantee the economy will be in the same shape.

In '16 I'd see all the negative press and his stupid immature tweets thinking he had no chance, but every time I actually saw him speak he looked sounded very impressive.
    Willie is spot on.

There’s a stark disconnect between the media caricature of Trump and Trump in front of a crowd or Trump meeting one on one with people. Unfortunately, Trump’s Twitter account too often supports the caricature.

I think it was the speech before AIPAC that Trump’s speech making ability surprised me. He’s pulled them off enough doesn’t surprise me any more.

    ____________

    This.

The writer nails it. Except that Trump WILL turn the light back on the democrat’s flirtation with Venezuela style socialism. Take that check to the bank and cash it. And so far democrats are making it easy for him.

This is what would piss me off if I were a democrat lol: Trump is vulnerable and his polls numbers show it. But, that only holds if democrats put up a good moderate candidate. Problem is, I don’t think a moderate democrat would survive the primaries.

Also, I’ve seen the Tea Party/AOC wing analogy a few times. The two are only analogous in the sense the wings steered the party in their desired directions. But the Tea Party wasn’t loony. These characters like AOC would actually be a danger to the country if they ever got into power.

Trump knows how to get Dems to defend the wrong things, he is a master. Kinda like when lefties got stuck defending MS13. Trump knew that the Dems would be sitting in the sotu address as a means to protest, and Trump effectively exploited their sitting to show all the things that Dems won't support.
