And at that point in the timeline the cops said "Chicago Police have shot down two local media reports claiming that its detectives thought “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett had staged his alleged hate attack."
But I'm sure you're going to tell us what the cops were really thinking.

How is what I wrote a trap?
This is from the article you posted:
In an extraordinary step, the police department’s top spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, put out a statement on Twitter that said: “Media reports about the Empire incident being a hoax are unconfirmed by case detectives”
He said the police superintendent had contacted one of the stations to “state on the record that we have no evidence to support their reporting and their supposed CPD sources are uninformed and inaccurate.”
They said they were unconfirmed. Again, the police could very well have thought it was a hoax but they're not going to come out and say until they have all the evidence. That's how they are supposed to operate.
You mad bro? Stop trying to read everybody's mind and listen to their words: "We gave him the benefit of the doubt."
"Smollett took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career," Johnson told a news conference, adding that the actor paid the brothers $3,500 to stage the supposed hate crime.
"This stunt was orchestrated by Smollett because he was dissatisfied with this salary. He concocted a story about being attacked," Johnson said. "We gave him the benefit of the doubt."
Just wondering if it's possible for you to answer anyone's posts without resorting to vulgarities. Maybe you think that helps your argument but it doesn't.
