"Stolen valor" refers to someone claiming to have received honors while in the service, or who claims to have served, but did not. Mr. Phillips served. He stated he went into the service at age 17, which would have been 1971 for a man of his age. The war officially ended in 1975 when we evacuated Saigon. My brother served from 1968 -70, but in S. Korea. He is considered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars to be a "Vietnam-era vet" -- even though he did not set foot in Nam, and thus he would be eligible to join based on that, if he were still living. I was eligible to join the VFW ladies auxiliary based on his service; they sent away for his DD-214 to verify his status.
