I don't think coal will ever go completely away as many states are still using Coal Fired electricity, and they aren't planning on going totally green. But natural gas is starting to outnumber coal as new plants are replacing older plants.
And most American coal today is not coming from back East! Most coal today is coming from the huge strip mines in the northwest. It's easier and less costly to mine, and can be delivered anywhere in the US within a couple of days. So the US is in abundance of available and cheap coal.
And that is the main reason why the Eastern Coal production is dying! It has nothing to do with regulations like Republicans claim. It has to do with price, availability, and natural gas continuing to replace coal as a better alternative.
