A top member of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association said Wednesday that flying is "less safe today than it was a month ago" due to the partial government shutdown.

"I would say [flying] is less safe today than it was a month ago, absolutely," Trish Gilbert, the executive vice president of the labor union, said on "CNN Newsroom."

"We are working with barebones crews," Gilbert said. "We have controllers there doing what they do very, very well – but how long can you expect them to do it without all of the systems behind them to keep the system safe? And the planes in the air?"

Yawns. If people don't show up to work, they should be fired. The no-showers are the ones putting the greater burden on the people who do their job.

Would you work without pay? For how long?

Bloody hell, didn't Reagan sack whole swathes of air traffic controllers?

Yes. Until they move out on their own

Strange however that the democrats never seem to be bothered by people not getting paid while their unions strike but when it is government workers, the sky is falling.

If it makes you feel better, my house sits right under a high volume victor highway. Maybe you will get lucky and the air disaster you are praying for gives you a two-fer.

Let's at least set the record straight. Government workers pay is delayed till the Government is funded so technically they are not working without pay. Is it right? Hell no!!!!!! In fact those in congress should not be receiving a paycheck either. If they weren't getting paid I bet this shutdown would have been over weeks ago!

In the past shutdowns, the furloughed workers got back pay. What that means is they didn't go to work but got pay for that time away despite not working.

If someone does their job and gets back pay equal what they would have made, how are they not getting paid?

Not only will those that are still working get back if history can be used to predict the future but those furloughed and not working will, too.

Since I was there and you weren't, unless you can prove otherwise, you shouldn't make claims you can't support.
