The most qualified people to discuss what is really needed are the Border Patrol agents out on the front line that are already dealing with the problem in their daily work. They know what would make their job easier.

And then you have ICE, who has their own unique problems of tracking down people who have out-stayed their VISA's. Fences or walls have nothing to do with their problem. And that happens to be the largest problem in just number of targets alone.

There is already a fence or wall that stretches over 750 miles of border that covers all the portals and for miles across all of the populous areas on the border.

And that is needed and is serving it's purpose well. But where it's not fenced, are vast desert areas where the terrain is hard to fence, or where the land is privately owned and the ranchers do not want a structure that prevents the grazing of their herds, or there are steep canyon walls or dry creek beds or rock escarpments that are hard to fence. You have everything out there.

If you ask the Border Patrol agents, they say these areas should be fenced- if not for humanitarian reasons only, because crossing those areas on foot is a suicide mission, and there is no natural water available in the desert, and everything out there will either sting you, stick you, or bite you! Along with extreme cold and hot temperatures that will also kill you. The Border Patrol is tired of finding these people dead in the desert who try it.

But if all of these thoughts are not part of the discussion, and people think that a simple fence or wall is going to resolve all of this, then this discussion is over.

And after 20 billion dollars spent on a wall, we will realize we just wasted a lot of money, and it didn't resolve any of the real problems.

I think the project to finish the barrier should be put on hold until some experts can study it further, and get a dollar figure established so that it can then be appropriated appropriately by Congress- and not some dollar figure or need for it Donald Trump pulled out his ass!
    Reasonable response thanks.

It is a reasonable response, but first you have to cut thru Trump's lies and tantrums.

1700 Holes have been cut in the San Diego portion of the border wall in the last 5 years by smugglers. You use data like that to strengthen the wall.

most undocumented overstay their visitors visas , and employers hire the undocumented for cheap labor

So how about controlling visas better and jailing employers who hire them

Have you done a census on where people live? Perhaps you could share the results.

The U.S. civilian workforce includes 7.8 million unauthorized immigrants, representing a decline since 2007.

Between 2007 and 2016, the number of unauthorized immigrant workers fell, as did their share of the total U.S. workforce over the same period. This group accounted for 4.8% of those in the U.S. who were working or were unemployed and looking for work. The number of unauthorized immigrant men in the prime working ages of 18 to 44 also declined, but not women.

Compared with their 4.8% share of the civilian workforce overall in 2016, unauthorized immigrants are over represented as a share of the workforce in farming occupations (24%) and construction occupations (15%).

In all industries and occupations, though, they are outnumbered by U.S.-born workers.
