The figure is probably wrong as a Katana is usually split after multiple foldings and a billet of low carbon steel inserted that gives the Katana its sharp and hard edge but a flexible back....which gives it it's incredible slicing power. So that probably throws off your calculation...which is beside the point...the sword has a crap load of layers.
Do you have any rapiers in your collection? They can make some incredible swords these days with modern alloys, forging and heat treat techniques.
