Remembering Ray Noble & Al Bowlly
Ray Noble had one of my favorite big bands. I was five or six years old when I heard Midnight, The Stars And You (written by Ray Noble) countless times on the radio in the late 1930s. I immediately recognized Al Bowlly and Ray Noble’s orchestra in the movie The Shining:
Youngsters probably never heard of Ray Noble, but if they ever went to a high school prom there is a good chance the last song they heard was Goodnight Sweetheart co-written by Noble in addition to composing numerous songs that are classics.
Ray Noble died in 1978.
Al Bowlly died In 1941 when:
He was killed by a Luftwaffe parachute mine that detonated outside his flat at ten past three in the morning.

Here is a bit about parachute mines for anyone that is interested in a long-forgotten WWII weapon:

The basic test of freedom is perhaps less in what we are free to do than in what we are free not to do. It is the freedom to refrain, withdraw and abstain which makes a totalitarian regime impossible. Eric Hoffer
