Manafort, Cohen were prosecuted for tax matters that could have been resolved by civil settlement

Paul Manafort thought he was in the clear in the summer of 2014 after meeting with federal prosecutors and FBI agents about his Ukrainian income, bank records and income tax returns.

Michael Cohen was charged so quickly he never got a chance to meet with the Justice Department’s Tax Division to negotiate a non-criminal solution to his tax evasion, a court filing says.

Today, both men stand convicted of tax cheating in indictments brought by special counsel Robert Mueller and the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan in 2017-2018.

    The two have other similarities.

Manafort and Cohen worked closely with President Trump, as campaign manager and personal attorney, respectively. Both men didn’t come under investigation until the FBI opened its Russia probe in July 2016. A Manafort friend said that if the political consultant hadn’t gone to work for Mr. Trump, he never would have faced charges in a 2014 probe that had gone dormant.

Conservatives see decisions to prosecute them — on tax charges not remotely connected to Russian collusion — as the Justice Department’s and Mr. Mueller’s strong-arm tactics. They wanted to force guilty pleas and then gain cooperation, with a goal of getting evidence against Mr. Trump.

Could have, or they could have been solved with criminal prosecution.

The intentional and criminal way they went about committing these crimes warranted criminal prosecution.

I don't know why Trump supporters are so down on Robert Mueller.

He certainly is helping to "drain the swamp."

And I am pretty sure he is going to continue to help drain the swamp.

What more can they ask for?

Is There Anything Trump, Cohen, and Manafort Didn’t Lie About?

    https://theintercept.com/2018/12/09/...dnt-lie-about/

In a separate case involving former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort, Mueller also revealed an intriguing new line of inquiry. Mueller has charged that Manafort violated his plea agreement by lying rather than cooperating fully and issued a heavily redacted document in the case late Friday. Among other things, the court filing accuses Manafort of lying about his interactions with Konstantin Kilimnik, who worked with Manafort in Ukraine. Mueller has previously alleged that Kilimnik has ties to Russian intelligence.

The significance of Mueller’s new filing about Manafort is that it raises new questions about connections between Trump’s campaign manager and a figure with ties to Russian intelligence. Many of the details are frustratingly redacted in the Mueller filing, but it suggests that Kilimnik plays a more important role in Mueller’s investigation than previously believed.

What is obvious is that, despite Trump’s denials, he and his campaign were involved in repeated, serious efforts to develop deep connections to Putin’s regime from the very beginning of Trump’s run for the presidency.

Perhaps someone who did not participate in lying the nation into Iraq the 2nd time would have been a better choice.

Tax Fraud, Tax Evasion, and laundering of money, not registering as a Foreign Agent, illegal Campaign Donations, lying to Congress, Lying to the Justice Department, and failure to cooperate after pleading guilty and agreeing to cooperating with the government, racketeering, are all serious crimes, and he was damn lucky he is not doing life if he had to face concurrent sentences and punished for all of his crimes.

It could have gone a lot worse for him. He got a deal!
