California Wants To Tax Text Messages

Nope...my understanding is that the tax would be applied to the rate being charged by the carrier for the users texting plan. So if the if the texting plan cost $5/month then the tax would be something like 5% of that $5 texting plan.

The article states it is likely a flat fee. Did any of you actually read the article?

Uhh...what I just wrote is pretty much a flat rate. Like a flat rate of 5% on your monthly texting plans fee.

I was listening to a discussion on this the other day in the news. They were quite specific that the tax would be applied to the amount billed in the monthly texting plan.

Yes. It's not a message fee/tax. It's a tax on the plan and they will probably go after data plans next if this succeeds.
