nov 15 2018 Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has targeted Walmart with a bill aimed at making the company raise its minimum wage, CNBC reports.

Sanders introduced the Stop Welfare for Any Large Monopoly Amassing Revenue from Taxpayers Act, or Stop WALMART Act, on Thursday, the same day that Walmart announced its quarterly earnings and its forecast for the rest of the year.

"The Walton family, the owners of Walmart, are the wealthiest family in America with a net worth of about $180 billion. Meanwhile, most Walmart retail workers are working for horrendously low wages with minimal benefits," the senator told CNBC in a statement. "The wealthiest family in America must pay its workers a living wage."

He added that “Amazon did the right thing by raising their minimum wage to $15 an hour,” according to The Washington Post. “Walmart can and must do the same.”

Democrat Jared Golden win Maine's 2nd District race

The final vote retabulation in the 2nd District race gave Jared Golden just over 50 percent of the vote.

AUGUSTA - State election officials declared Democrat Jared Golden the winner of Maine's 2nd Congressional District race against incumbent Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin.

A federal judge rejected U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin's request to force the Maine Secretary of State to stop the ranked-choice run-off on Thursday morning.

American tax payers subsidize Wal-Mart, who educates and encourages its rank-n-file employees to get on govt assistance programs. Surely you're aware your govt's long involvement in the destabilization of Venezuela. No?

Walmart's minimum wage is actually a good bit higher than the federal minimum. Their problem now is hiring only part-time when they can get away with it. I think Bernie is barking up the wrong tree here.

Why does 77 year old Bernie Sanders need two homes including a $600,000 vacation home.
Sanders net worth is two million.

I wonder how many disenfranchised WalMart workers can live in his vacation home. Bernie your a socialist, share your wealth.

Who is Bernie kidding. At $15.00 an hour for a 40 hour week the annual salary is $28,800 ($700 above proverty level).
The WalMart employees should be making $25.00 an hour for an annual income of $52,000 which is much closer to the median income.

I’m sure Bernie and his politician friends that have a net worth over a billion can share their wealth with the WalMart employees.

You want to force WalMart to increase wages, don’t work for WalMart. They will increase wages when they can’t find workers. Stupid politicians should not be involved in vilifying companies to increase wages.

Don on the other hand is the poor man's champion.

Ever since Plato and Aristotle wrote on the topic, political theorists have known that democracy cannot flourish on soil poisoned by inequality. … [T]he resentments bred by such divisions are tempting targets for demagogues. … Dramatic inequality poses a mortal danger to the shared reality required for a healthy liberal democracy … [such] inequality breeds delusions that mask reality, undermining the possibility of joint deliberation to sole society’s divisions. …

Under conditions of stark economic inequality, when the benefits of liberal education, and the exposure to diverse cultures and norms are available only to the wealthy few, liberal tolerance can be smoothly represented as elite privilege. Stark economic inequality creates conditions richly conducive to fascist demagoguery. It is a fantasy to think that liberal democratic norms can flourish under such conditions.

Assuming it were ever enacted, it would last all of 5 minutes in the federal courts. Bills of Attainder are a no-no.

Walmart to raise its starting wage to $11, give some employees bonuses following tax bill passage

Walmart is increasing its starting wage rate for hourly employees in the U.S. to $11, after passage of the tax law.

The company said it will also expand maternity and parental leave benefits, and provide a one-time cash bonus for eligible employees of as much as $1,000.

Walmart said it's still looking at other "potential additional investments" that could come after the new tax laws.

Walmart saves billions from the Trump tax break and then proceeds to give certain employees, not all of them, a one time bonus. In the meantime Walmart saves on taxes year after year, and the employees get nothing.

A one time bonus while Walmart continues to save billions year after year. maybe that makes sense to you.

Only employees with 20 or more years of Walmart employment will get the full $1,000, however.

Absolute peanuts compared to the money the company is saving in taxes.
