According to the Credit Suisse 2018 Global Wealth Databook, 34 million American adults are among the WORLD’S POOREST 10%. How is that possible? In a word, debt. In more excruciating words: stifling, misery-inducing, deadly amounts of debt for the poorest Americans. And it goes beyond dollars to the “deaths of despair” caused by the stresses of inferior health care coverage, stagnating incomes, and out-of-control inequality.

Numerous sources report on the rising debt for the poor half of America, especially for the lowest income group, and largely because of health care and education costs. Since 2008 consumer debt has risen almost 50 percent. The percentage of families with more debt than savings is higher now than at any time since 1962.

It could be argued that Scandinavian countries face the same degrees of debt as Americans. But far less of the debt is for health and education costs. And the Scandinavian safety net is renowned for its generous provisions for all citizens.

Ever since Plato and Aristotle wrote on the topic, political theorists have known that democracy cannot flourish on soil poisoned by inequality. … [T]he resentments bred by such divisions are tempting targets for demagogues. … Dramatic inequality poses a mortal danger to the shared reality required for a healthy liberal democracy … [such] inequality breeds delusions that mask reality, undermining the possibility of joint deliberation to sole society’s divisions. …

Under conditions of stark economic inequality, when the benefits of liberal education, and the exposure to diverse cultures and norms are available only to the wealthy few, liberal tolerance can be smoothly represented as elite privilege. Stark economic inequality creates conditions richly conducive to fascist demagoguery. It is a fantasy to think that liberal democratic norms can flourish under such conditions.

I agree....... Trump's portrayal of himself as paternalistic should be a clue. He hasn't campaigned on empowering the people.. Its all about what he and only he is going to do for the sheep.

Lol, I live in a trailer park. They ARE in my neighborhood. And I’m not knocking immigrants either, they basically come here just to be less poor, I don’t think they figure they’re gonna be rich(by our standards anyway). I’m even more concerned about our homegrown poor folks who are content to suck at the government teat and make excuses for their condition generation after generation. And I’ll do a little experiment this evening on the way home, I’ll look for starving skeletal poor people in the streets begging for alms, like I saw in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. Those are some pretty wealthy places that never seem to draw any attention. We never seem to address the causes and solutions of this “problem”. We throw money at it

You and your ilk, are our motivation. What thinking person wants to live under the thumb of radical leftist police state tyrants? Answer, none.
