    Default Muslims in the news

In 2016, Ilhan Omar became an overnight sensation in Minnesota politics. Her primary victory over 22-term incumbent Phyllis Kahn secured the Minnesota DEMOCRAT Farmer Labor Party (DFL) endorsement of Omar’s candidacy to represent House District 60B in the state legislature. Minneapolis’s Star Tribune trumpeted Omar’s victory in a huge headline on its front page, proclaiming that the Somali immigrant’s victory had “made history.”

As many candidates do, Omar made her personal background an integral part of her campaign. But neither the candidate nor the reporters who covered her have shown much interest in exploring one aspect of her personal story that came to public attention: the fact that she is not legally married to the man she advertises as the husband and the father of her three children. In fact, she is legally married to another man—who may be her brother.

Alan Dershowitz said Thursday that former President Obama and former Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) have a special obligation, because of their participation in the Million Man March, to denounce statements from Louis Farrakhan made on Twitter comparing Jews to insects.

"He's a classic anti-Semite," Dershowitz said on "Fox and Friends" of Farrakhan, who posted a video to Twitter Wednesday with the caption, "I'm not an anti-Semite. I'm an anti-Termite."

A Minnesota County Court unsealed divorce records of Rep. Keith Ellison, the DEMOCRAT candidate for Minnesota attorney general, and his ex-wife Kim on Wednesday, ending a legal battle between the former couple and two media outlets.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune and Alpha News petitioned the Hennepin County Family Court for the divorce records after Karen Monahan, the congressman’s former girlfriend, accused him of physical abuse. Ellison, who is also deputy chairman of the DEMOCRAT National Committee, has denied the allegations.

Ellison, who divorced in 2012, unsuccessfully opposed unsealing the documents, citing privacy concerns.

The documents, which were obtained by the Star Tribune, contained a 2015 statement in which he reported that his ex-wife had hit him throughout their 25-year marriage. The affidavit, written in response to a motion for increased spousal maintenance, said that “it was very humiliating to admit that I was a domestic abuse victim."
