Truly astonishing documentary, Peter Jackson is magnificent!
Enthralling, moving and utterly electrifying trip into the trenches: BRIAN VINER reviews Peter Jackson's colourised WW1 documentary They Shall Not Grow Old
There have been many harrowing dramas about the Great War, but Peter Jackson’s extraordinary documentary, which had its world premiere last night as part of the London Film Festival, is as close as we can come now to seeing it as it was lived, as it was endured. I watched it next to my son, a young adult who has known no existential horror greater than double maths on a Monday morning, and I confess to shedding a tear at the thought of what, a century ago, might have been.
There is one particular moment that is both profoundly moving and utterly electrifying. It is the point at which the grainy black-and-white footage of soldiers preparing for war becomes colourised, and we start to hear – or think we hear – them talk. If you are lucky enough to see the film in 3D, it is also the point at which that kicks in. It is a gasp-inducing moment.

I got to get off my dead ass and see first man. I’ve read Armstrong’s bio by Hansen on which the movie is based. I wonder if they have any scenes from Wapakoneta where Armstrong mostly lived as a kid and where his father was a county auditor for the State. I have a lot of trivial connections with Armstrong. My Grandparents lived on the same street as his parents. I remember the house on that street, that Hansen described, that an amateur astronomer had built his own observatory onto his home that was on the same street. My Grandparents attended the same Church as his parents. My Aunt was a bridesmaid at his sisters June’s wedding. My Great Uncle, the B-17 pilot I told you about was one of his classroom instructors when he was 16 and working on his pilot license and I’ve met the old crop duster who was his first flight instructor.
So yea I got to see it and see how accurate the movie is.
