No. They are two mutually exclusive governmental structures.

A democracy is government by majority rule. It has no constitution.
A republic is government by law. It has a constitution.

Either form of government may use representatives. The existence of representatives does not define the structure of that government. Even a dictator is a representative (at least of those that go along with him).

A common definition of "republic" is, to quote the American Heritage Dictionary, "A political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them" — we are that.

A common definition of "democracy" is, "Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives" — we are that,
AMERICAN HISTORY ITSELF IS A TESTAMENT TO THE STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE OF AFRICAN PEOPLE. WE, ALONG WITH THE COURGE AND SACRIFICES OF CONSCIOUS WHITE AMERICANS, LIKE VIOLA LIUZZO, EVERETT DIRKSEN, AND MANY OTHERS, HAVE FOUGHT AND DIED TOGETHER FOR OUR FREEDOM, AND FOR OUR SURVIVAL.

In America, rights are are not determined by what is just, fair, equitable, honest, nor by what Jesus would do. Rights are determined ONLY by what you can DEMAND.

Fuck Donald Trump for his bashing of women and Indians and everyone else on his shit list!

And Fuck You Donald Trump ass-kissing idiots who are entertained by Donald Trump's ignorance and reckless behavior.

No one should have to prove their Indian blood to Donald Trump or anyone else. You could pick up a rock and throw it into any crowd of Americans gathering, and you couldn't fail to hit someone who doesn't have some American Indian bloodlines in their family tree.

All this talk about Liz Warren isn't about her Indian heritage, it is nothing more than hatred being expressed at her because she is a Democrat and a woman.

If you didn't have this, you'd find something completely else to slander her for and run your hateful mouths about.

Compositional error fallacy. Ancient Rome. Ancient Greece. That is where these words come from.

    False argument.

Dictionaries interpret and translate words for common use.

    Dictionaries did not define them.
    See above

    Irrelevant.
That language evolves is irrelevant in a conversation about language. :0) I accept your surrender.

No. They are two mutually exclusive governmental structures.
No, they are not .. thus the hundreds of years we've spent arguing the two.

A democracy is government by majority rule. It has no constitution.
A republic is government by law. It has a constitution.
That's not true. It's simply your interpretation of what a democracy is .. which by the way, comes in various forms.

At the end of this discussion, whenever that comes, we will still be considered both .. and for good reason.

Incorrect. A republic is government by law. It has a constitution. That constitution is the highest law of the land, including the power to define and structure the government it creates. The United States is organized as a federated republic.

We are NOT that. The United States is government by law, not of men. It has a constitution. It is a federated republic. It has multiple layers of constitutions. Democracies have no constitution. It is mob rule.

What would be the functional part of your argument? What difference does it make?

Does the sudden awareness that we're a 'republic' change how we operate and govern?

The United States is considered the greatest democracy in the world. What difference does you calling it a republic actually make?

Perhaps you should send a memo to the American Heritage Dictionary, as well as countless dictionaries everywhere and tell them they don't know what they're talking about .. but you do.

    Good luck with that.
