The articles I posted from the SF Chronicle don't really exist. We haven't for years called it an Indian Summer in SF. And all the other posters ITT who spoke of Indian Summers are just plants. The term does not exist. This is all just an alternate reality.

Indian summer is not derogatory. Neither is calling lakes Huron or Erie, nor calling a car Pontiac.

I haven't heard that term in a very long time, and more importantly, I've never heard of a Native American protesting its use. Given the mystery surrounding its origins, not sure how it could be considered offensive.
That being said, if Native Americans find it offensive, then civil society should stop using it.
AMERICAN HISTORY ITSELF IS A TESTAMENT TO THE STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE OF AFRICAN PEOPLE. WE, ALONG WITH THE COURGE AND SACRIFICES OF CONSCIOUS WHITE AMERICANS, LIKE VIOLA LIUZZO, EVERETT DIRKSEN, AND MANY OTHERS, HAVE FOUGHT AND DIED TOGETHER FOR OUR FREEDOM, AND FOR OUR SURVIVAL.
In America, rights are are not determined by what is just, fair, equitable, honest, nor by what Jesus would do. Rights are determined ONLY by what you can DEMAND.

I recall hearing the term as a kid in Portland in the 70s. It's a term I use mentally when late warm spells make me think of it. Never seemed derogatory in any way, but if it is, find a new term to describe late fall warm spells.
Pretty insane thing to gripe about, actually.
