The coal industry is not going away. Coal is still mined and traded on international markets. Coal is used quite heavily in some areas of the United States. It's cheap. It's abundant. It produces a lot of useful products. It's easy to transport by railway, barge, or ship.
Coal can be use very cleanly as well. A modern coal plant has no visible exhaust rising from its stack other than a steam plume (water). These plants are compact and efficient. Even China is recognizing the downside of it's crappy coal plants that soot up the place and is moving to modernize its plants. Acid rain from coal is no longer a problem in the United States.
The base argument in this thread was that coal plants are going bankrupt. That's true, some have. Also, some wind farm companies are going bankrupt. So are some solar plants. So are some oil producers. Bankruptcy occurs everywhere. It does not mean the entire industry is going away. To make that leap to conclusion is a compositional error (a fallacy).
It makes sense to use the energy source that is abundant for your area. It even makes sense to export that abundant resource to others if they are willing to buy it. That IS the market. That IS capitalism. You can't kill the free market. It's immortal. Even if you drive it underground, it's still there. It still operates. See your local drug dealer for details.
Fascism and price controls don't work.
I'm sympathetic with the miners that fell for Trump's lie.
Many of these coal miners
- have few if any other prospects,
- are native to chronically impoverished / under-resourced regions
and so voted for Trump not because they believed his lies, but because they were so desperate to believe that particular Trump lie, improbable though it was.
Saint Thomas More said: "A drowning man will clutch at a straw."
And so now the voters that voted for Trump because they wanted:
- all illegal aliens deported
- immigration from majority Muslim nations indefinitely suspended
- a coast to coast wall to be built at Mexico's expense
- our once thriving coal industry to be restored
- numerous etceteras
It's a rash of broken promises that has apparently blind-sided the naïve. So what am I supposed to do? "I told you so!" doesn't un-ring the bell.
"It should be obvious to anyone why conservatives and libertarians should be against Trump. He has no grounding in belief. No core philosophy. No morals. No loyalty. No curiosity. No empathy and no understanding. He demands personal loyalty and not loyalty to the nation. His only core belief is in his own superiority to everyone else. His only want is exercise more and more personal power." smb / purveyor of fact 18/03/18
Don't worry.....COAL IS TO BIG TO FAIL, I am sure the one world order folks will pump trillions of dollars back into the industry with tax payer based funds.
As was pointed out....in a FREE MARKET, its the market that determines the fate of any product or service. If coal goes the way of the dodo bird that means this capitalistic society has found a viable replacement energy source. Once the demand is gone so are the goods, services and products being sold on the free market. Its supply and demand economics.
The only reason that coal is making somewhat of a comeback is because it was artificially manipulated and attempted to be replaced by HIGHER PRICED green energy sources because of political powerplays. When the time is right as determined by the market itself.....Coal can be given a proper funeral service and buried to be nothing but a footnote in history like the steam engine and a DC power grid.
This thread is not about COAL....its about the fear generated by those who VOTED against the failed democrat policies. FYI: The election is just a few days away....and Trump's numbers continue to go up instead of down, ITS ALMOST PANIC TIME. One thing is for sure as judged by all the factual evidence....THE COAL states are never going to support the left anytime in the near future. By the time the blue collar worker forgets about the tactics used against the working stiffs in this nation.....the SCOTUS count is likely to be 6 or 7 conservatives to 2/3 liberal, legislating from the bench will be gone the same way coals future is gone. Not to mention, permanent tax cuts and an alternative health care plan to replace Obamy Care.
ELECTIONS have consequences. When LIBERALS win back the power they can place the coal industry against the wall and execute it...but until they do win some political clout, COAL has been granted a temporary stay of execution by Executive Order.

Trump did enough to WIN. You lost....why did the left not promise more jobs instead of declaring they were going to shut the coal miners down and make them unemployed? If you had any sense.....you would not have to be arguing from a place of weakness.
Elections have consequences. Tree Hugging is now an endangered trend.

Coal is booming internationally, Africa doesn't care about coal they just want cheap energy.
