We both drove old beaters and had an equally long commute to work. Mine was from a rural county 20 miles from the office; hers was from a black-majority suburb of St. Louis, called Ferguson, also about 20 miles from the office. Both of our commutes were mostly on interstate highways that went through mostly white areas. We both had our mufflers fall off our ancient rust-buckets within a day or two of each other. Neither one of us had the $$ to get them fixed right away so we drove them like that to work. Here's the fun part. She got pulled over multiple times by both local and highway patrol cops, and got two tickets. I got pulled over once, and the nice young man just told me to try to get that fixed as soon as I could.

I bet you can't guess which one of us is white and which is black.
