Live attendance and television ratings at NASCAR races did not just start declining yesterday. It is a stale, decade-old story, with race tracks removing thousands of seats that had been filled in NASCAR’s prime, and faithful stock-car couch potatoes tuning elsewhere.

It appears, however, that fans are now deserting in droves. Sunday’s big Monster Energy Cup race at Talladega, Ala., won by Joey Logano on a gorgeous afternoon, was run before grandstands that were mostly filled, but empty enough that the word “TALLADEGA” in unused seats at each end was visible.

(Maybe overhead shots from the Goodyear blimp are not such a great way to sell the sport.)

But it was the television ratings from Talladega — one of NASCAR’s most famous tracks — that were most eye-opening. The race delivered a 2.85 national rating on Fox, with 4.7 million viewers. The same race in 2017, a week later but also on Fox, had a 3.5 rating and 5.9 million viewers.

That is an 18% drop in ratings and a 20% drop in viewership, but it gets even more grim. The 2016 race at Talladega had a 4.0 national rating, with 6.7 million viewers. So in just two years, the race lost two million of 6.7 million viewers — a 30% plunge. (The same race 10 years ago drew nine million viewers, incidentally.)

For you under-educated right-wing morons out there .. it's called CONTEXT .. look it up.
Hey Toby if you want to talk about NASCAR then start a thread.

But like the NFL, NASCAR changed things that turned off its fan base relative to racing.

But nice try at a diversion

    Bwahahahahahhahahhahahhahahahahahah

Maybe the NFL should have Kaperdick call games for Thursday night football

Forgive me, but what is up with Neck Car? Are they kneeling too?

That's not a sport anymore than bass fishing or drone racing.
The athlete is the mother fucking car. A competition?... to be sure. But these guys aren't athletes
because of their job, they are athletes in spite of it, and because they need to look good
on TV so pimply prairie dwelling imps can look up to and emulate them and to sell ad buys.

Why The 2017-18 Season Was Great For The NBA

The recently concluded NBA regular season has been perhaps the most successful since the league began in 1946. Television ratings are up, attendance set another record, fans are subscribing to the league's streaming service, sales of merchandise are up and the value of an average franchise is at an all-time high.

At the end of the 2017-18 regular season, NBA ratings were up across all four networks when compared to last season. ABC led the way at +17%, while TNT was +13%, ESPN +4% and NBA TV +1%. It was the NBA’s highest-rated season in five years. The audience growth was led by hard-to-reach young adults, with ratings for 18-34 demographic up by 14% and the 18-49 age group up by 15%. The median age of the NBA viewer is relatively young at 42, compared to the NFL (50) and Major League Baseball (57). Local TV ratings grew by 3%, after a drop of 14% in 2016-17 season.

NBA fans are not just staying home to watch the action on TV, either. Attendance for regular season games increased for the fourth straight season reaching 22.1 million. Average attendance per game was 17,978, with a record high 741 sellouts. By the end of the season, the league had sold 95% of all tickets available.

Other league products and services were strong as well. The NBA’s streaming provider League Pass, which gives fans access to watch out-of-market games, grew its subscriber count by 63% when compared to 2016-17. Online merchandise sales reported an increase of 25% from one year ago. According to Forbes, the average value of an NBA franchise now stands at $1.65 billion, an increase of 22% from last year. Overall, the 30-team league produced $7.4 billion in revenue, up 25% from one year ago.

The NBA is THE most socially conscious league in all of sports. They won't go anywhere near Trump's stench. :0)

    Real patriotism wins out.

I prefer NHL to NFL, but I like both.

I'm not a flag-waving "patriot". But apart from obvious embarrassments like:

I take no intrinsic shame to being a U.S. citizen.

I consider NFL style sport anachronistic.
I realize efforts are being made to reduce the peril.
    - The goal posts used to be on the goal line, H. The goose-neck was an excellent idea.
    - Penalizing helmet to helmet, good idea.
    - etc.

    BUT !!

It's still a rather brutal sport.
And sizing the field of play in yards instead of meters, did I mention anachronism?

And then there's the obvious, shape of the ball.
    What else does that? Rugby?

    The NFL's a $cash $cow.
Stadium ticket sales is a small part of total revenue. How much $profit do you suppose they make on a $17.50 stadium concession hotdog?

Sponsors like NFL because many that watch TV watch via DVR, and can zap commercials.
That doesn't work with sports fan viewing live, real-time broadcasts.

The NFL simply needs to understand its market. Some might think the NFL is competing against MLB.
Actually, the NFL is competing against:
    - Skidoo snowmobiles
    - Remington hunting rifles
    - the movie channel and other cable venues

I don't think it's quite time to start digging any oval-shaped graves yet.

Actually it is a very difficult sport. You wouldn’t understand it

The reason ratings are down is because they have made changes that have alienated their fan base. Like the NFL they take their customer for granted and think nothing could get them to leave. Or more importantly they commit the worse mistake and try to grow their brand at the expense of their core fan base.

There is nothing wrong with trying to grow your business. But you can’t do it at the expense of your loyal fan base

The reason for the NFLs decline is multifactorial. I predicted two years ago because I am an oracle and always ahead of my time

Here is why the NFL is declining not in any order

    1) Too chickified. In its attempts to bring women in as fans they went overboard with pink this and pink that during October
    2) Bogus concussion data. Not only have they bought into lame data but they have legislated the physicality out of the game
    3) Bullshit calls. What is a catch? Helmet to helmet. And this year the “defensive player can’t land on a QB”
    4) Kneeling during national anthem
    5) Roger Goodell is worst commissioner in history of NFL

I've left MLB for good. I won't watch another MLB game until the pitcher that pitched a no-hitter is credited with his remarkable accomplishment.

Looks like the nfl miscalculated. They started the anthem scandal to distract us from the CTE scandal and they accomplished that. But now the anthem scandal has taken on a life of its own and they didn't plan on that.
