The Republican party, "the party of Lincoln" has a noble history.
For centuries Republicans have put a proud face on conservatism.
- Fiscal responsibility.
- Smaller, less intrusive, less authoritarian government.
- Conservative politics at home.
- Conservative diplomacy abroad.
As recently as presidential candidate Governor Reagan (R-CA) campaigned against Democrat President Carter on balancing the budget, and paying down the U.S. federal debt. But true to form in Republican party hypocrisy, once in office, Reagan didn't lower the U.S. federal debt. Reagan more than $doubled it.
Senator McCain, long renown as a man of noble principle & personal integrity, is gone. Who among Republicans is here to replace McCain's leadership? President Trump?!
The Republican party is in tatters. Who is to say what the GOP stands for today?
Candidate Trump promised to "drain the swamp", "make America great again".
And how has President Trump undertaken this?
Trump has:
- created serious tensions between the U.S. and our long-time European military allies
- disrupted relations with our long-time trading partners
- made buddy-buddy with some of the worst tyrants on Earth, Russia's Putin, and NK's KJU.
And as the Mueller investigation continues, the swamp apparently deepens.
To vote Republican is to endorse this political mayhem.
This leaves the U.S. electorate two options:
- don't vote, or
- don't vote Republican.
How can we look at this and not recognize it as a crisis?
And in the foreseeable future, not even a glimmer of hope on the political horizon.
Speaker Ryan (R) and Majority Leader McConnell (R) are good men. But with a Republican lock on U.S. federal political leadership, what have they accomplished?
Who do you want to lead the GOP out of this political mire?
What within practical reach would you like a new GOP to accomplish?
"It should be obvious to anyone why conservatives and libertarians should be against Trump. He has no grounding in belief. No core philosophy. No morals. No loyalty. No curiosity. No empathy and no understanding. He demands personal loyalty and not loyalty to the nation. His only core belief is in his own superiority to everyone else. His only want is exercise more and more personal power." smb / purveyor of fact 18/03/18

Certainly."Shouldn't you take a closer look at your own party?" R6
But the Libertarians remain also-rans. That's the point of this thread / topic.
Who are political / fiscal conservatives like me supposed to vote for? When the current Republican budget was worked out, Schumer / Pelosi got with McConnell / Ryan, and the Republicans rolled over! They gave the Democrats what they wanted!
And our already astronomical U.S. federal debt soars even higher.
This topic, this thread is NOT an endorsement of the Democrat party. It's merely sounding the alarm. If the Republicans don't give us something to vote for, we face a Democrat controlled federal legislature. That's OK w/ you?!

No, it isn't. It is unfortunate the amount of waste in government spending, from the federal level right down to the local level. It seems that no matter where one sits on the political spectrum, it's easier to spend other people's money.
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.
A responsible conservative party is needed for the system to work, but the GOP no longer fits the bill unless principled Republicans can find some cojones.
It started with Lincoln and it ended with Trump. What an epitaph.
McCain was against Obamacare before he was for Obamacare. Is this principle we should honor the principle of political opportunism?
Amen bro'."no matter where one sits on the political spectrum, it's easier to spend other people's money." R6 #4
The definition for "liberal" I bear in mind is:
one who would give you the shirt
off someone else's back.

yeah
In the Republican party?"You need us to tell you who a “fiscal conservative” like you should turn to?" TD #6
Yes please.
The Paul boys (Ron & Rand) have been fiscal stalwarts for a generation. That's fine.
I've already mentioned LP.org
iirc Ron Paul was the 1988 Libertarian presidential nominee.
That's how long I've been voting Libertarian.
And in all these decades, not one Libertarian I've voted for has ever obtained the office.
Let's face it.
The political action in the U.S. (please pardon me Governor Ventura (I-MN)) is within our political duopoly: Democins, or Republicrats. Pick one.
Perhaps you may wish to consider using newspaper for something other than lining a bird cage."How so?" TD #7

I might have enjoyed replying, if there was syntactically comprehensible content here."Is this principle we should honor the principle of political opportunism?" K #8
After your editor has reworked this, try again?

Deep down, you are a lefty, and you do not seem to realize that McCain was an lowly swamp creature. I am sorry about the way he vacated the swamp, but good riddance. He was a lefty, and it doesn't matter if he was a Repub or a Dem. What matters is that he was a lefty swamp creature, and that he is no longer a part of the swamp. Establishment Repubs are lefties like you, and I would love to see them all vacate the swamp.
Trump has taken the Repub platform that was overrun by swamp creatures, and his agenda is an example of what Repubs should follow if they want to have the GOP in control of the ship. The silent majority backs Trumps agenda and the lefty media, as loud as their voice is, is the minority.
The Truth Does Not Need To Be Supported With Censorship.
I'm vastly too mature to squabble over labels."Deep down, you are a lefty" E #12
Since you're so undisciplined, so ignorant that you're not even willing to post one SPECIFIC concise quotation posted under my pseudonym, and present a persuasive argument about why you believe it's "lefty" rather than conservative, I will accord your opinion the consideration it deserves: zero.
