At this point, there are several guaranteed blue states. It's hard to see Massachusetts, Vermont, or Hawaii going red any time soon, and even New York would probably only go red for a very particular kind of Republican (someone in the Bloomberg mode). Sad that this effectively disenfranchises people in such states, at least in presidential elections. If no realistic turn of events could have an election decided by a state like that, politicians are pretty much free to ignore the interests of people in those states, thanks to how the electoral college works. A Republican president could not care less about whether he loses Hawaii by 5 points or 50 points, the impact is identical. Similarly, a Democrat isn't going to spend much time thinking about, say, Oklahoma.
