As noted in the link below, suicide will take, on average, 131 lives in the US today. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the US overall but spikes in certain demographics. Why don't the Democrats care? Why do they believe banning guns will same more lives than better mental health care?

IMO, they don't care about saving lives. They only care about control. Nanny Statism is a Democratic ideal: an all-powerful Federal government which dictates what Americans, think, believe and do "for their own good". "For the children". That is not the Founders had in mind when they wanted Freedom for all.

https://www.americashealthrankings.org/explore/annual/measure/Suicide/state/ALL
Nationally, the suicide rate increased 25.4% from 1999 to 2016, with increases occurring in every state, save for Nevada. In 2018, there were an estimated 1.4 million suicide attempts and more than 48,000 deaths by suicide, making it the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. Firearms were involved in half of all suicides, and there were more than twice as many deaths by suicide than by homicide.

Societal costs associated with suicide and suicide attempts were estimated at $93.5 billion. These costs include lifetime medical fees and lost work costs.....

Me: So then you support Medicare-for-All which would give everyone mental health services?

Dutch: No.

Me: So then you support mandatory mental health pre-screenings for every gun owner and prospective gun owner?

Dutch: No.

Me: So you're just complaining about it for the sake of complaining about it?

Dutch: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

WE do massive amounts on the State and Federal level to prevent death by suicide. If you want to compare that to what we do to prevent death by gunshot, I think you will find Suicide gets way much more attention.

Also, if he was truly concerned about suicide, he'd support Medicare for All which would give every single person the ability to go to a mental health professional to get the treatment they need.

But he doesn't support Medicare for All.

So he's just complaining about this in order to be heard.

I certainly don't care, but some Democrats do, Oom.
Why are you talking out of your ass?
Put your thumb back in it.
You only need one thumb for the hole in the dike.
[I said dike, not dyke, Oom.]

Still short by an average of 131 per day. Not to mention the 1.4 million suicide attempts every year. Results count and the result is Democrats are declaring victory on the suicide front and focusing on high capacity magazines instead.

There's also the demographic differences:
Populations with disproportionately high suicide rates include:

  • Males have a suicide rate 3.7 times higher compared with females.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native individuals have the highest suicide rates in the nation, followed by non-Hispanic white individuals. Suicide rates among Hispanic, Black, and Asian/Pacific Islander individuals are significantly lower than rates among American Indian/Alaska Native and white individuals.
  • Older adults have a higher suicide rate when compared with younger adults and adolescents. By age and gender, the highest suicide rate is among males ages 65 and older, followed by males ages 45 to 54. Among females, those ages 45-54 have the highest rate, followed by those ages 55-64.
  • Suicide rates among veterans were 1.5 times greater than non-veterans, after adjusting for age and gender in 2016.
  • Those living in rural areas compared with those living in urban areas.
  • LGBTQ adults and youth compared with heterosexual adults and youth.

Thanks for proving me correct about Democratic priorities. :)

What makes you think Democrats don't care about suicide deaths?

Do you have ANYTHING to support this charge?

Or is it just another cheap-shot hollow baseless claim...

Hello Dutch,

The focus of their agendas.

Yes, the priority of Democratic agenda items.

Insult all you like. That'd be typical of political extremists to shit on anyone who disagrees or has a different way of doing things. People like you are the ones pushing "fall in line or else."

Thanks for proving my point!

I have not seen anyone declare victory on suicide prevention, In fact, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is installing suicide prevention barriers as we speak. I think they can do two things at once.

Awesome. Dude, you're smart enough to see that's treating the symptoms again, not the causes.

It's as silly IMO as the fucking Trumpers who want to build a 2000 mile wall to stop illegal immigration: treating the symptom, not the cause(s).

What happens when a suicidal person knows they can't use the Bridge? Go home and use their Robin Williams necktie? Their Anthony Bourdain belt in the closet? Just drive off a convenient overpass or head on into a semi

Isn't it time we started working smarter, not harder?

Oh baloney. There was no insult. I critiqued your OP.

And my point is that Democrats care about lives, and you have failed to establish that they don't.

You're arguing a manufactured assumption without basis.

You truly believe it's a "baseless claim" despite the evidence provided or are you attacking because you don't agree?

Consider this; I've disagree with Trump's Wall from the beginning. I provided evidence on better ways to solve the illegal immigration problem but also noted neither party seems interested. All the Trumpsters reacted exactly as you did. Go figure. LOL

There is a well-established link between economic despair and suicide.

Democrats just voted to spread a pile of dough around.

That should reduce suicides, right there!

What did Republicans do?

They got good at twiddling their thumbs and voting no.

You made a claim that Democrats don't care, but provided nothing to back it up. I'm calling that a baseless claim.

Now do a comparison of suicide rates in 2020 vs other years. How many psychiatric beds were filled in 2020 vs other years. Teen/young adult opioid overdoses 2020 vs other years.
