your logic is asinine. let us take your logic to it's logical conclusion:

person A doesn't want to vote for person B because of comments B made. A encourages others not to vote for B. B might not get elected, thus, his livelihood will be threatened. onceler wants us to not disparage B because his or her livelihood is threatened.

if you truly believe in the marketplace of ideas, you would not claim boycotts are a threat. i don't agree with most boycotts, but they are not a threat, they are form of speech that is protected under our constitution.

I'm fine w/ someone choosing not to buy their record if they disagreed w/ what the Chicks said. Organizing a boycott is a different animal, and it IS meant to intimidate. I don't know what world someone has to live in to think that's not what it's about.

It's pretty pathetic & scared, imo. You don't agree w/ someone, so you just want to shut them up. To me, it is unAmerican in spirit.

onceler, onceler, onceler....boycotts are like protests. they are protesting the person.

the person is allowed to make their comments, but there is no expectation that their work, words, etc....are sanctified. if i owned a local store and said or advertised that i will only sell goods to whites....what you're saying is -- anyone who boycotts me wants to intimidate me. but we all know you would support that boycott.

no onceler, it is not intimidation. if i owned a sandwich shop and then stood out on the sidewalk spouting hate or whatever, there is no expectation that someone would not want to boycott me. and that is not intimidation. i can preach my hate all day long on the sidewalk....but i have no right to expect others to not boycott me.

No, Yurt - it is intimidation. That is exactly what the boycott of the Chicks was intended to do; it wasn't intended to express ideas. It was intended to shut them up; nothing else.
