Ann Romney: Not All Moms Have the Choice to Be a Stay-At-Home Mom

My Mother finally got her chance to be a stay at home Mom...at age 65. As a single mother with five kids, she didn't have a ‘choice' of staying home and raising her kids...she had to work to put food on our table, clothes on our backs and a roof over our heads. My Mom worked two jobs, riding the bus every day to clean homes in one of the richest parts of town to put me and my brothers and sisters through school and me through college. While we lived in a 2-bedroom apartment in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Dallas, I don't ever recall anything that I wanted that she didn't work hard to give me. And regardless of our economic circumstances, the values were always there. We had to do our homework before watching television, we had to go to church on Sundays, we had to be in the house before the sun went down and we had to eat out vegetables at dinner (I still hate beets!). My Mom wasn't a working Mom or a stay at home Mom...she was just a mom!

While Hilary Rosen's comments about Ann Romney not working "a day in her life" might have been ill-advised (and very ill-timed if you're a Democrat), the underlying premise of her remarks is that at least Ann Romney had that choice! Most women simply don't have a choice of being a "working Mom" or a "stay at home Mom", they're just busy trying to be a Mom. Their circumstances do not allow them the luxury of deciding whether or not they are going to work...they simply have to work.

I don't know Ann Romney, but she seems like a lovely woman. But with all due respect, for Ann Romney to attempt to act like she has the faintest idea of what women like my Mom had to go through is ludicrous, and for Mitt Romney to throw this dog-and-pony show by dragging his wife out on the campaign trail with the promise that his wife can "tell him what women today are going through" is even worse. I don't begrudge Ann Romney for her wealth or for being a stay at home Mom. What I do not like is someone worth over $20 million dollars telling me that they know what I go through, and what's even more insane is that the policies that Mitt Romney is promising to enact should he win the Presidency would make life even harder for women like my Mother and even better for women like Ann Romney.

My Mom is now 78 years old, with diabetes and showing early stages of Alzheimer's, but she's still going strong...and even though all of her children are grown and have left home, she is still a "stay at home Mom." My only wish is that she could have had that choice earlier in her life when it would have mattered and when she could have truly enjoyed it!

Thanks Mom!

I don't know what school of journalism Dee Evans graduated from, or what grammatical education she has had, but whenever you have a name of a person, followed by a colon, what comes after that is supposed to be something they said or a point they made. Here, we have a rather blatant and dishonest attempt to make it appear Ann Romney said something she didn't say.

Now I don't have a problem with Ms. Evans ode to her mom, I think it's sweet and touching, but it has nothing to do with Ann Romney or Hilary Rosen's comments, for that matter. The "nerve" that was struck with Rosen's lament, was that stay at home moms don't work and therefore, shouldn't be entitled to opinions about political matters, or so was the point she tried to make. She directly attacked Mitt Romney for listening to his wife on the issues of the day, citing that his wife had "never worked a day in her life." The "issue" was NEVER stay at home moms versus working moms, it was that Rosen dismissed the role of stay at home moms, and characterized them as "not working." This 'slap in the face' to stay at home moms everywhere, resonated across the land, and the outcry was so sharp and swift, the Liberal Machine went in to full damage control mode, and this little piece of journalistic garbage is a part of that attempt.

Shut the fuck up you ignorant piece of feces.

Maybe even a mammie or two for her breastfeeding children? Perhaps?

It is possible, she is a cancer survivor and suffers from MS. Clearly life was "easy" for her in all things. Idiots really shouldn't be personally attacking this woman, but I'm glad they do.

Why is it that liberals assume Mitt and Ann Romney have always been wealthy, or that they've always had it "easy"? From my understanding, both were on a limited income during their college years, during which time two of their children were born. Ann has battled both MS and cancer - circumstances that few would understand. Mitt nearly died in a car accident, and one of his companions was killed. I could go on...

My point isn't that the Romney's have had a difficult life. But they haven't had it easy, either. Everyone has challenges they must face. To marginalize theirs is quite unfair, especially considering Ann's health issues.

How is that relevant to Jarod's question?

The bulk of Romney's wealth was created in the late 80's and into the 90's. You all are assuming that he has been rich since day one. That he just must have hired all sorts of nannies and maids etc... that Ann didn't do much to help raise her kids.

When it comes to the Senate or people at the Presidential level, all we're talking about is varying degress of wealth, anyway. I don't know why anyone on either side of the political aisle makes a big deal about how rich anyone is. Our gov't is basically a bunch of rich folks, passing laws that benefit other rich folks.

I have no real problem w/ Romney's wealth, beyond the problems I have with money ruling Washington in general....

Once again, they demonstrate that they are full of hate and envy. It is for this reason that I, despite my left-wing stance on many issues, would NEVER call myself a liberal.

The fact that Romney graduated with honors with duel degrees from Harvard... MBA/JD... something few people do allowed him to be heavily recruited coming out of school. Romney certainly didn't have it as rough as some, but this assumption by liberals that the Romney's had nannies and maids raise their kids for them is pure nonsense.

Prove it.

I agree. It is why we need serious campaign finance reform. Unfortunately, I don't think it'll happen in the near future. Obama was probably our best chance at getting it...but in the end he proved himself to be just as corrupt as the rest of them.

The amount that Obama spent in '08 and the amount he's about to spend to get re-elected is ridiculous, and has completely changed the game as far as campaign finance goes. It's depressing.
