Obama loses the Catholic vote

Conservative

Repent, America!

When it comes to mandatory contraception coverage under health reform the Affordable Care Act, the nation's Catholic bishops won't budge an inch.

Yes, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, New York Archbishop and Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, initially said he would study President Obama's newest variation of the requirement.

But that didn't last long. Now, it's no sale unless the mandate is lifted from any person of faith who objects to facilitating contraception coverage for employees.

Their position today is essentially unchanged from what they said August, through their general counsel Anthony Picarello when they blasted the requirement that

...private insurance plans to cover contraception—including abortifacients—and sterilization, calling the mandate "unprecedented in federal law and more radical than any state contraceptive mandate."

The comments also criticize the narrow "religious employer" exception to the mandate, explaining that it provides "no protection at all for individuals or insurers with a moral or religious objection to contraceptives or sterilization," instead covering only "a very small subset of religious employers."

The comments issued then called this

..."nationwide government coercion of religious people and groups to sell, broker or purchases 'services' to which they have a moral or religious objection." This represents "an unprecedented attack on religious liberty..."

Now, after Dolan once more spoke with President Obama, Bishops still say,

...the lack of clear protection for key stakeholders—for self-insured religious employers; for religious and secular for-profit employers; for secular non-profit employers; for religious insurers; and for individuals—is unacceptable and must be corrected.

And in the case where the employee and insurer agree to add the objectionable coverage, that coverage is still provided as a part of the objecting employer's plan, financed in the same way as the rest of the coverage offered by the objecting employer. This, too, raises serious moral concerns.

And the rallying call is still religious liberty vs. "government coercion of religious people and groups to violate their most deeply held convictions." The newest press release from the USCCB concludes:

... The only complete solution to this religious liberty problem is for (Health and Human Services) to rescind the mandate of these objectionable services.

We will therefore continue—with no less vigor, no less sense of urgency—our efforts to correct this problem... And we renew our call to the Catholic faithful, and to all our fellow Americans, to join together in this effort to protect religious liberty and freedom of conscience for all.

So, Obama is exactly where he was before with Catholic leadership.

I doubt most Catholics in America oppose birth control. A lot of Catholics all over the world don't exactly line up with church dogma - and their position on birth control is one of the weirdest and least justifiable out of all of them. Not even an extreme fundamentalist protestant would probably say that you shouldn't use birth control during marriage.

Abortion is murder and the Catholics know it is used as birth control.

Obama is going to lose.

This isn't abortion. It's birth control. The Catholic church opposes condoms and the pill. That's pretty goddamn loony. Of course he shouldn't pay such a loony position any mind. And this debate isn't over including abortion in health insurance, it's over the pill. Most Catholics ignore that proclamation.

This is how much Catholics support restrictions on birth control.

No matter who wins the nomination, the GOP candidate is likely to be acceptable to Catholic voters. This may well be crucial during the general election campaign.

I would love to see Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum run as a "good" Catholic.

Both approve of the death penalty and torture in direct defiance of the Church.

Is it any surprise they objected to birth control. Even saintly Mother Teresa objected to birth control while babies were brought into a hell-hole dying from disease and starvation. To believe it is God's will to bring children into such a situation takes the mind of a seriously mentally ill individual. Future generations will look back on this the same way we now view the burning of witches.

the vast majority of catholics use birth control at some point in there life and I suspect dont care. Many people I know who work for CAtholic orginizations resent that there health care coverage will not cover birth control when all others do. I doubt the president lost many votes over this.

I had a Catholic girlfriend, she was fairly strict and worked for CAtholic Charities so her health care would not pay for her birth control, she simply had her doctor make up another reason she needed the pill and they paid for it.

You and many others are missing the entire point.....its irrelevant even if not one Catholic "buys Church dogma 100%.....irrelevant.....

The point is, the government should not be trying to FORCE its dogma on any Church......if the Catholic Church refuses to support contraception,
that is their RIGHT.....
that is their BELIEF.....
that is their article of FAITH
and it is against the Constitution to force any religion to support something against their beliefs....its like forcing a Quaker to go to war.....

More proof that even a blind squirrel can find a nut sometimes. Problem is Obama already compromised. The issue is over, the OP is just about muddying the waters to confuse fools like you.

In fact Obama's position is all the more stronger now. Why don't you read the article Poet linked too? Ah, nevermind, it is 3 pages long.

Its irrelevant what they believe.......the government cannot MANDATE that any donate or support the death penalty or torture or anything else....

The issue is the Constitution......

Another irrelevant response.....Obama can compromise all he wants
The issue is telling a Church what they MUST support against their beliefs.....any Church...and any issue.....
The Constitution gives the Church absolute rights in the first amendment...rights against governmental interferance.
Now if it can be argued that the Church, any Church,
is doing something unconstitutional, Obama might have leg to stand on.....

Can government mandate that the Cath. Church ordain women as priests ?......

Some priest denied Ed Kennedy communion in Church......could he appeal to the gov. or is it not their business ?

Can Cath. Hospitals be forced to perform abortions in their OP....?

The thing is, the Catholic Church no longer has any moral authority.
