In a statement issued amid an Obama family vacation in Hawaii, the president said he signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 on the last day of 2011 mostly to authorize $662 billion in funding
for the military.

Obama cited a litany of disagreements with various provisions of the bill after stating "The fact that I support this bill as a whole does not mean I agree with everything in it."

Many of his criticisms revolve around the detention of foreign and U.S. prisoners and the potential for weakening a president's authority in such situations.

"I want to clarify that my administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens," he said.

No, you posted a video of a senator saying the administration asked for the language to be removed. I saw no proof.

Funny how that never gets mentioned.

You see the republicans in the house wrote this into the bill.

Why did they want to give Obama this power?

yes, you fucktard, it's the sponsor of the bill, a democrat leader, asking if they were aware that the Obama admin asked them to remove parts that would have protected US citizens. No wonder you're a democrat. You have ZERO comprehension. Listen to the video again, idiot.

The issue is not being debated along party lines in Congress.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D) of Michigan (liberal on most issues and a friend of the Obama administration) and senior Republican committee member Sen. John McCain of Arizona forcefully argued for the bill.

"Al Qaeda is at war with us," said Sen. Levin. "They brought that war to our shores. This is not just a foreign war. They brought that war to our shores on 9/11. They are at war with us. The Supreme Court said, and I am going to read these words again, 'There is no bar to this nation's holding one of its own citizens as an enemy combatant.'"

This coming Monday, a tea party group plans to protest in Sen. McCain’s home state.
