Al Qaeda flag was seen flying over Benghazi's courthouse

Doesn't seem to be displayed with any sort of reverance or importance, nor is the photo especially....noticable. It seems like this is a random snapshot, as opposed to some sort of official photo. Wouldn't AQ WANT some sort of publicity? And wouldn't Ghaddafi sympathizers, who had been claiming AQ was involved from the beginning, despite evidence to the contray, want a message or photo like this? Is it still flying today?

it is flying over a courthouse in the second largest city. it may be not be cause for great concern, but it certainly is something.

How do you know it is flying over the courthouse? Even assuming the Daily Mail article based on the vice.com article was accurate, it says that the flag was flying over the courthouse last week.

I guess we can conclude Al Qaeda is or will be a nuke power in the near future.....

Thanks again Barack.....

It's a legitimate remark. If it was important, why isn't AQ making statements about it? Why has the Libyan government been so eager to work with Western nations, and cooperate with them? It's not making sense if they're anti-west.

it makes perfect sense. what statement do they need to make? flying their flag over a courthouse, above the national flag, is a huge statement.

what libyan government? i did not realize there was an actual government set up yet. i see no dichotomy in AQ using western powers to oust gaddafi in order that they can gain a major role in post gaddafi libya. let the west use their bombs and then AQ sweeps in victoriously.

They've had a tranistional government for some time now. And a very pro western one. And no, a random, poorly executed picture from a week ago (a long time in a tranistional nation) isn't exactly a statement.

a transitional government is not the permanent government. it doesn't matter if they are pro western, what matters is who becomes the permanent or non transitional government. if someone flew the dixie flag over the state flag at a courthouse here, would you say they were not making a statement?

the quality of the picture is irrelevant.

It's entirely relevant. If I wanted to make a statement, I'd make a decent looking one. This looks like something cobbled together at the last minute and not a lasting flag. Is it still there today? If not, why?

if it is up for one hour, the statement is made. again, if someone flew the dixie flag over the state flag at a courthouse, would they be making a statement?

and tom's link gives more informative details, indicating it wasn't just hobbled together. i don't know if it is still there today, the fact is, it was there and flying over the state flag at a very symbolic location.

I don't think that we need worry too much, Libya doesn't have the factional problems of Iraq or Syria, although there may well be more fighting before the dust settles.

Likely, revolutions never end so cleanly as one would believe. I remain supportive of them and their government and efforts until it can be shown that they are contrary to the reasons for revolution in the first place. I also maintain that it was inevitable that the Ghaddafi would fall. NATO and it's involvment merely expedited such events, they did not cause them.
