Alabama Judge Gives Criminals Choice: Go to Jail or Go to Church

A small-town judge in Alabama is giving non-violent offenders a choice at sentencing: go to jail or go to church.

Under a program dubbed "Operation Restore Our Community," the city judge in Bay Minette lets misdemeanor offenders serve time and pay a fine or go to church every Sunday for a year, according to WKRG.com.

complete meadowmuffins. what if this was a muslim judge and he said you had to go to mosque for a year? or a jewish judge who said you had to go to temple for a year....

I would imagine given the choice, criminals would do anything to stay out of jail. Although looking up info on the city of Bay Minette, Alabama, I don't think its a big jew or muslim destination.

There were 2,950 housing units at an average density of 368.8 square miles (955 km2) . The racial makeup of the city was 64.3% White, 33.5% Black or African American, 0.6% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. 1% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.[2]

The Judge is right, church is punishment, it sucks, nobody wants to go...

I'd pay the fine, serve the time, and go away. Church for a year for this Buddhist? Hayul no! :D

Probably a supporter of Roy Moore. This is a travesty for both the courts and the community. I had rather not have people attend my church because they were sentenced to go there.

You would? Sounds like you want to turn away those that might need what is offered there the most.

Did I say anything about turning anyone away?

Our doors are open for those who want to be there. But someone who is attending to avoid jail is not going to be helped by listening to a sermon.

Cetainly not the first sermon, but over time a seed may be planted.

I am not so sure. My experience, having achieved 29 years of sobriety through AA, is that some people do get the message eventualy, even though they were initialy forced to attend.

You know, calling people names based on political views or thread responses is pretty low. But trying to malign someone because the are a recovering alcoholic is even lower. You want to post that other races are subhuman, and yet you show yourself to be something that thrives in the scum at the bottom of the gene pool.

I don't pay attention to a lot of the bullshit. But there are lines that shouldn't be crossed. You owe him? lol What a noble quest you have.

But regardless of how many times ya'll have insulted each other, the snide comment was some low shit.

What you characterize as snide and low is irrelevant...its the dude on the receiving end of the insults that weighs them....
what you might take in stride might mean something else to someone else....

I'm quite tired of the double standard applied all around........so I'll temper my reply's to mirror the civility I receive....
