Romney Stumbles With 'Hang Obama' Line in N.H.

"You remember that during the Ronald Reagan-Jimmy Carter debates, that Ronald Reagan came up with this great thing about the Misery Index? And he hung that around Jimmy Carter's neck and that had a lot to do with Jimmy Carter losing," Romney told the crowd at the Americans for Prosperity summit.

"Well we're going to have to hang the Obama Misery Index around his neck. And I'll tell you, the fact that you've got people in this country really squeezed with gasoline getting so expensive, with commodities getting so expensive, families are having a hard time making ends meet… We're going to hang him with that -- uh, so to speak, metaphorically, with, uh, you have to be careful these days, I learned that -- with an Obama Misery Index."

The remark was caught on camera and, according to the Boston Globe, elicited a mixed reaction of nervous laughter and applause in the crowd.

it is pathetic and truly hurts race relations in this country. it is like crying wolf....do it so many times when there is no wolf....

It wasn't much of a gaffe. Hanging something around his neck like an albatross isn't the same thing as hanging somebody, it is stupid race baiting to suggest it was even something other than that. It is shameless stupid race baiting nonsense, it is easy to see through, and it will make it look like Obama is as whiney as the McCain campaign if this is what they try all the way through the campaign.

Seriously, when there is real racism and real racist remarks the attempt to make such statements into "racism" takes away from reality and demeans what is otherwise a good cause.

Ask the people who suggest that it was racist, not me. I am stating clearly, that any attempt to make this "racism" is race baiting nonsense. We can start with the title that is total rubbish. He never suggested anybody "hang Obama" that's an utter falsehood, and it is race baiting.

Romney NEVER said "We're going to hang him with that..."? The portion I highlighted would certainly seem to contradict your claim...

Again, nobody suggested anybody should actually hang him, suggesting that was what he meant is stupid race baiting. (Apparently it is necessary to repeat what I said for the criminally partisan, they apparently have reading comprehension problems where they have an urge to make a statement about something nobody said). Want to try to read what I said rather than what you want me to have said?

It's like stupidly saying that "targeting" a congressional district means somebody wants to nuke them.

Romney clearly planned this horrid metaphor in advance. It’s a wink to the racists, birthers and conservatives out there that don’t want to see a black man in office, but allows just enough deniability in the event of liberals (rightfully) freaking the hell out about a presidential candidate suggesting we hang his adversary, a black man.
