Strong Alaskan Unions

You work 5 day weeks and get paid overtime for anything above 40hrs? thank unions. You get a paid vacation? thank unions. You get steady raises? thank unions. You got healthcare? thank unions. Every perk you get in your job and your whole comprehension of work is based on ideas unions fought for. You're just too stupid and brainwashed to realize it.

So what? Henry Ford revolutionized automobile manufacturing, but that doesn't mean we have to drive Model T's. Times have changed, grandpa. In our primarily services-based economy, unions have become obsolete.

I am of the mind these days that the 80's generation, the Scott Walkers of the world, need to get their way! That will teach them! They have always been a self serving generation and it will come back to bite them in the a$$!

Precisely... dinosaurs such as Crashk don't seem to grasp that.

and where would you be without the dinosaurs, they seem to still serve their purpose and remember, one day someone will respect you as much as you respect us! there is a time for everything under the sun and you too, will grow old, or you die, there is no other choice!

Rana, that's the point these knuckleheads don't understand. His wages, rights, benefits and time off were all issues unions fought for and won. He owes his middle class status and working conditions to the same labor unions he hates.

I know, they choose to insult us and think that their tech and service industries will serve them well, but just wait till it gets to the point where there are 100 people for every service industry job and they are let off because someone younger and cheaper is can do their job! The tech industry has been "safe" so far because the education is just catching up with the industry. Crashk, we have seen it happen to many other industries. They are just too young to remember, but their day is coming! and they are replaceable! Who will protect them when this starts to happen?

Not yet! and when they do, well, I hope you feel the same way then as you do now!

At 38 I'm not a young kid. And how did union workers create the tech industry for instance? The tech industry has never been unionized. Unions never offered stock options to my knowledge.

And is that why you have such a lucrative job, cawacko? the tech industry and those stocks are taking real good care of your generation! Good luck with that!

As I stated, unions served their purpose. But in our primarily services-based economy, they have become obsolete.

Sorry Crashk, but your delusional rants amount to nothing more than kooky conspiracy theories with no basis in reality.

No, he just got your goat! naaaaahhhhhhhhh!

Uh no, I've been unemployed for two years. And I'm real estate I'm not a tech guy. A lot of people are making a lot of money working in the tech industry and changing the world right along with it.

Unions still have their place, workers threatened to unionize to get better wages. Unions set the standards, the private non unions follow or lose workers.

The North Slope threatened to unionize, it made BP and Conoco sit up and take notice!

So you are wrong young one, they still have their place and if your look at the disasters called mining, you would know this.

And the point is, no one is trying to do away with union, .....private sector unions.....they have no place in the public sector ....

Ah, see there is the reason no unions, so far, the techies are making lots of money! Wait till the Chinese check up and the tech jobs are gone, too!

Some are. There are a good number that worked hours and hours for little money for a company that went broke. It's a very entrepreneurial environment. It is not a union type environment. And you think Chinese entrepreneurs are going to outproduce ours? What leading tech company was started in China?

Realtors have associations...tell me, in what do these differ from unions?

Those are you lobbying groups. Realtors (to my knowledge as I don't work in residential) work on commission so they get no salary so its kind of the opposite of a union work environment.

They are still a representative group that promotes the agenda of the body of its members and you can't be a "real" realtor unless you belong...correct? who sets the commission rate? who sets the standards for the industry? What would happen if it didn't exist?

Market sets the commission rate. Brokers can try to charge more if they want but with so much competition good luck with that. Brokers take haircuts quite a bit on commissions as well to get deals. I'm not quite sure how the National Association of Realtors work. I just know they lobby D.C. for rules favorable to their industry.

unions lobby for the rights of their workers...

unions lobby industries for rules and pay favorable to their industries...

What about the AMA, how many people hate that union?

Milton Friedman describes the American Medical Association (AMA) as the “strongest trade union in the United States”

Why aren't the government types trying to bust these guys?
