There are over 6 million CCW permits in the US. (states that allow concealed carry without a permit not included).
There are roughly 226 million adults (over 20) in the US. That means 3% of the adult population has a CCW.
If you have 200 people at an event, statistically you would have 6 people with a CCW. If one of them is packing and it shows, the media will get a shot of it.

most large scale protests end up with police beating and arresting several of the protesters. Notice that none of that happened in any of the rallies that people carried guns.

The entire issue of carrying guns is raised for one specific purpose. They want the uneducated masses to equate "armed" with "dangerous". If they portray those who carry as people who are ready and willing to murder innocent people, sooner or later they think they will have enough votes to amend the 2nd Amendment to make it read like a recommendation for having a military.
