Twelve-term U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) was recently criticized in independent political ads funded by a group calling itself Concerned Taxpayers of America. Rep. DeFazio wanted to know who was behind the ads, and he wasn’t willing to wait until the group filed its quarterly campaign finance report in October to find out. The Washington Post reports DeFazio as wondering, “Is this a corporation? Is it one very wealthy, right-wing individual? Is it a foreign interest? Is it a drug gang?”

So Rep. DeFazio did what any reasonable incumbent politician would do in that situation—with reporters in tow, he went to the address the group had listed with the Federal Election Commission and started shouting through the mail slot until someone agreed to speak with him.

...

More troubling, however, is the fact that disclosure creates the opportunity for direct personal retaliation. DeFazio’s stunt would not have been possible if Concerned Taxpayers of America had not been required to record an address with the FEC. And while DeFazio was merely interested in publicity, not everyone makes such benign use of disclosure information. For example, in 2004, Gigi Brienza made a $500 to John Edwards’ presidential campaign. As a result, her name, address, occupation, and employer were all listed on the FEC’s website. This allowed an animal-rights terrorist group to discover that she worked for Bristol-Myers Squibb and to place her name and home address on a list of “targets” beneath the message “Now you know where to find them.” While Brienza was never attacked, she has subsequently cut back her political activity—she will never again make a contribution over the federal disclosure threshold of $200.

Hey Defazio,

..."Voters are accustomed to manipulative political advertising, but it used to be possible to find out who was behind it, ensuring some degree of accountability," writes The Register-Guard. "Sniping from the bushes is allowed now in American politics, with no disclosure of who's pulling the trigger, how much ammo they have or where it came from. The chief remaining restriction is the one that prevents independent political groups from coordinating their activities with candidates' campaigns. But it will be difficult to know whether such coordination has occurred if the groups paying for political ads and other campaign activity hide in the shadows."

EFAZIO: You don't know Jason Miller?

OMEGNA: No. No, I don't, sir. ... I rent this place. [...]

DEFAZIO: Did you ever hear of Concerned Taxpayers of America?

OMEGNA: Nope. [...]

WASHINGTON POST: You're on the [voice] message, aren't you?

OMEGNA: Am I? I shouldn't be.

DEFAZIO: So you know nothing about Concerned Taxpayers for America, and you're not forwarding calls.

OMEGNA: No.

DEFAZIO: You're just a renter?

OMEGNA: Yes.

Concerned Taxpayers phone message in Omegna's voice...
"You've reached Michael Omegna at Jamestown Associates. I can't get to my phone right now, but if you leave me your name and number, I'll get back to you as soon as I can. If this is regarding Concerned Taxpayers of America, please leave a detailed message and I will respond back as soon as possible."

In the past if you wanted to know what corporation a politician represented all you had to do was follow the money. Now it's impossible.

So... as voters we are not allowed to know who is backing rightwing extremist candidates. If there is a pool I'll put $10 on the communist chinese. My second $10 bet will be on multinational outsourcing companies in India. Or maybe Japanese companies who want some of that old growth timber they have up there.

Oops, I forgot Republicons have made it impossible to find out and don't want us to know where the money is coming from.

You really think this is healthy for our country? Oops forgot, multinational and communist corporations are more important than the voters in America.

Disclosure is a good thing.

You globalist fascist turds just want free reign for corporations to influence the public with your globalist bullshit anonymously.

Justice was served here.

Justice was not served. We still don't know who's money is behind the attack ads. The guy at the door was lying thru his teeth. Chirst! his voice was on the phone message! Concerned Taxpayers for America is a shadow group probably backed by foreign money.

Republicons around here had better wise up and realize globalists have more power in this country than the voters.

The whole indirect democracy experiment really hasn't worked out.

They should go back to the ol' drawing board....

So i guess REAL disclosure would be a good thing. But justice was not served here.

The original posters seems to think too much was disclosed, because a proxy individuals was yelled at. We need more disclosure, not less.

it;s so typical of corporate sellouts like stringfield to get it backwards.

It's working just fine if you are a politician who want's to represent corporate interests over the interests of the American people.

What are you talking about? They still have to disclose the donors >$200. DeFazio was simply too impatient to wait for the quarterly report.

The young man who was ambushed by DeFazio was frightened. He is a staffer.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/24/AR2010092406094_2.html

He said he was a renter who was not acquainted with Concerned Taxpayers of America or its treasurer Jason Miller.

Miller later acknowledged that the young man at the house does indeed work for him. "He's a junior staffer who didn't know what to say when he got ambushed by DeFazio," Miller said. "He shouldn't have said that."

Their brainwashing is complete. They are free to be slaves and never realize who's cracking the whip.

come on wingnuts, defend Concerned Taxpayers of America!

"Is this a corporation? Is it one very wealthy, right-wing individual? Is it a foreign interest? Is it a drug gang?" DeFazio said. "We don't know."

first off, why does anyone have to defend it? If you're not intelligent enough to determine if the message is bullshit or not, you deserve to be a moron.

secondly, ANYONE, individual, group, or corp, can pay for political ads. it's called freedom of speech. If you don't like it, amend the constitution.

If someone's pissing down your neck wouldn't you want to know who it is?

Could i pay for one?

It helps to know who's spreading it, so you can more fully understand their agenda.

Individuals can't get as many loans to spread propaganda as businesses can.

So Concerned Taxpayers of America spent 86k on ads against DeFazio (D) in OR and Communications Workers of America: spent 100k for TV ads against former Rep.Tim Walberg, R. MI

It's all even stevens~

What you want is free speech for the rich only. Does DeFazio have enough ad money to defend himself from these lies. I don't know - probably not. But he did bring light to the way you corporatists have manipulated the system so you can hide your propaganda money.

Oh... i didnt see DeFazio attack, ambush or otherwise harass that stooge at the door. Gotta love the subtle use of rightwing propaganda terms.
