Establishment candidates have unfair advantage?

On Tuesday night, Conservative Republican Christine O'Donnell won the nomination for U.S. Senate fair and square in the Republican Primary.

The problem? While in the middle of her victory speech, representatives of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) said they would refuse to support O'Donnell in the General Election because their favored candidate, Liberal RINO Mike Castle, did not win.

<snip>The official noted that if her position improves, the committee might reconsider its allocation of scarce resources.

Both parties’ campaign committees typically fund races they consider winnable. According to an NRSC tally, its Democratic counterpart has reserved TV time for ads in Missouri, Kentucky and Colorado, but not in Ohio, Arkansas and Indiana.<snip>

Still, the group’s decision not to fund O’Donnell will likely grab headlines since Castle had such strong backing from party leaders.

She will go down to defeat....most likely. It was fun to watch Begalla grinning on the CNN panel all night. You could almost see him licking his chops thinking how much of a better shot the democrats have at hanging on to the senate now.

The trouble we face is that kind of thinking. She came out of nowhere to win the nomination.

Its a common enough story.

Back in the 80s, Bill Baxley was the democratic party's favorite candidate. However, Charles Graddick won the primary election. Baxley took it to the Alabama Supreme Court on the grounds that he claimed Graddick encouraged republicans (scarce in AL back then) to vote in the dem's primary. The court said either hold another primary or have the party name the candidate to represent them.

The party named Baxley. The people were so pissed off they elected a primitive baptist minister named Guy Hunt as gov. He was the only republican candidate. Since no republican had won the gov's race since reconstruction, no decent candidates ran under that party.

Bill Baxley is one of my favorite Alabama politicians. I loved his answer to the KKK after they threatened him. But when the party ignored the people......

do not underestimate the anti-incumbent environment right now. Even for a state such as delaware.

Totally agree with you Ice. This conventional thinking nonsense pisses me off. The left loves it... thats why they have been spinning it all day long. Its wishful thinking on their part. All of the sudden there is something wrong in voting on Principle? Since when? This Castle guy was basically a Democrat so why would he be useful in Nov. He has already said that he wont vote to repeal the Health Care Scam... that alone is enough for me to write his ass off .

This O'Donnell is high energy and the RNC is not doing itself any favors by Publicly saying they will not support her. What a crock.... a slap in the face to very base thats going to ride them to victory in Nov.

the gop has a choice to make. they can continue down the current path of maintaining centrist status quo and lose big, or they can wake up and smell the coffee and realize that Americans have had enough of the one party system.

Delaware does not have open primaries like Alabama.

But the question is will moderate republicans (I'm assuming they voted for Castle) show up in support of O'donnell along with the supporters she already has or will they stay home? Or worse for her, will they vote for the "other guy."

According to the most recent polling I have seen, only 31% of Delaware voters think O'Donnell is fit to hold public office. She has an unfavorable rating of 50%.

Now I'm not saying she can't win, but she's got a lot of work to do.

Her pledges are VERY popular

Pledges to vote against all earmarks & pork barrel spending. (Aug 2006)
Demand a Balanced Budget amendment. (Jul 2010)
Limit federal spending growth to per-capita inflation rate. (Jul 2010)

On the other hand:

Now our polling suggests with O'Donnell's victory that Coons will win more Republicans than any other Democratic Senate candidate in the country. That's because of a general unwillingness to support O'Donnell from Castle's moderate base- folks from the centrist wing of the GOP are planning to support Coons 54-31. Overall he takes a full 25% of the GOP vote while also largely consolidating the Democratic base for a 72-13 lead on that front. He also has a narrow 42-36 advantage with independents, a group Democrats are losing with most everywhere else.

[snip]

Only 31% of voters in the state think O'Donnell's fit to hold public office while 49% think that she is not. Even with Republicans in the state less than half at 48% believe that she is [fit to hold public office.

BREAKING

O'Donnell to receive backing!

Influential Republicans pledged Wednesday to support Christine O'Donnell's general election campaign after party leaders initially turned their backs on the Tea Party candidate following her upset win in the Delaware Senate primary.

O'Donnell's rise from obscurity to victory over longtime Rep. Mike Castle had sent Republican honchos in Delaware and Washington into a state of political shock. Aides for the top fundraising arm for Senate Republicans said Tuesday she would not be getting help from them -- a reaction that raised concern the party would torpedo its chances at a congressional takeover out of spite.

But National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn said in a written statement Wednesday that O'Donnell would have NRSC support as well as the maximum $42,000 donation from the organization.
"Let there be no mistake: The National Republican Senatorial Committee -- and I personally as the committee's chairman -- strongly stand by all of our Republican nominees, including Christine O'Donnell in Delaware," Cornyn said.

Castle, who argued O'Donnell could not win in a general election against Democrat Chris Coons, reportedly will not endorse O'Donnell. But party leaders on Capitol Hill tried to embrace her candidacy Wednesday.

shes off the reservation loony if she thinks looking at porn is cheating and masturbation is wrong. people with limits of mental capacity like that have no business in office not to mention the risk they present to people who they serve if there personal distorted beliefs become part of there decision making.
