President Barack Obama on Friday endorsed a controversial plan to build a mosque and Islamic center just blocks from Ground Zero in Manhattan, despite the strong objections of conservatives, civic groups and those who lost loved ones in the September 11 attacks.

“Ground Zero is, indeed, hallowed ground,” according to prepared remarks Obama was to deliver at a White House dinner celebrating the Muslim holiday of Ramadan. “But let me be clear: as a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances.”

Obama did say...Earlier this week, in a statement recognizing the onset of the Muslim holy month, Obama said that the rituals of Ramadan “remind us of the principles that we hold in common, and Islam’s role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance, and the dignity of all human beings.”

This was a political calculation for Obama, and I think, a risky one. He is playing to the left-wing base, who is literally cheering the building of a Trophy Mosque at Ground Zero. He is doing so, by using religious tenants of Christianity and the Constitutional freedom of religion. He has reasoned that Muslims have the right to build a mosque there, and we should 'do unto others' and welcome it.

The problem is, everyone knows and understands, the mosque is symbolic of the terrorists conquest on 9/11. Muslims have a long history of building mosques as trophies of their conquests. It is an unbelievable display of irreverent disrespect for America, and an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose it. But, I have to say, from a purely legal aspect, and 'rights' aspect, it's difficult to argue the Muslims don't have the right to build this mosque, but it needs to be portrayed for what it is. A symbol of Islamic Victory on 9/11/01. ....and Obama is in FULL SUPPORT of that!

There was a time when the muslims preserved much of the law and literature of the ancient civilizations.

When the christians crusaders sacked cities they burned handwritten scrolls of Plato. They destroyed works of art. The muslims then preserved much and were an advanced civilization where arts, mathematics, and philosophy were concerned.

You mean like when southern racist lynched blacks? By your logic shouldn't any Baptist church need authorization and approval of any nearby African American community to build a church anywhere near the people the oppressed, murdered and terrorized for centuries?

What about Mexican-Americans. Catholics actively participated in the genocide of between 20 and 50 million of their people. Shouldn't they be allowed to prohibit any Catholic Church from being constructed near any of their homes or communities?
