For those who've never shot a gun, I suggest a few lessons. An easy start is a nerf pistol shooting darts at the tv when Fox News is on. LOL
Another way is a pellet pistol in the backyard. 20-30 feet is enough. All the techniques for accurate shooting can be learned from there. After that, is to actually experience the noise and kick of an actual firearm. A .22 rifle is an easy entry. Same for a pistol. Those are available for rent at the range so you don't have to buy something.
Practice up to looking at purchasing a pump shotgun and a 9mm pistol. Both are common, and good ones are relatively inexpensive. I prefer a 12 guage, but for home defense, 20 gauge does the job.
