The Surprising Cure for Political Division | Psychology Today

Well when a candidate from one party calls supporters of the other party deplorable it's difficult to see the common ground. When you're called a fascist a Nazi a ____phobe or a _____ist it's even more difficult to see the commons ground.

When the gay "marriage" debate was raging I asked a leftist if I could be opposed to gay "marriage" and not be a homophobe I was told, "No". Where's the common ground there? Leftists rarely compromise and repubs usually cave. Sad but true
Have you noticed among the MAGAT cult, that everyone that doesn’t toe the line is a “them”? An outsider. The enemy.

Immigrants
Democrats
Gays
Trans
Any dissenter
Elite universities
Blue cities and states
Judges who rule against them
Canadians

Then, there are the rest of us. The reasonable ones. Take me, for instance. I’m not gay, trans, an immigrant, Canadian or live in a blue state. I don’t always agree with judicial decisions, but accept them. I have never attended a protester rally. On and on.

But, in my mind, NONE of those people are “them”. They are “us”. Not the enemy.

“Them” vs “Us” is merely one of the trademarks of a cult. You’re in one.

I don't agree withe everything trump does same as RFK Jr and Tulsi but I agree in general they are doing a fine job and I liked their appointments. I'm not a hybrid but that doesn't mean I'm not willing to consider alternative POVs
Horseshit. You’re lying through your teeth. You are one of the main Trump apologists.

Could we agree that as long as both sides are trying to understand why they disagree with each other, they're on the right track?

I took a look at the 3 dictionary definitions I could find on wordnik.com for homophobe:

I.can agree but but that's not his the left works

I.dont fit any of those descriptions. I'm opposed to gay "marriage" not gays. The inability of people to distinguish between the two speaks to the limited intellectual capabilities of those people.

Alright, that seems fair, although I think it's important to note that I think everyone should have the freedom to decide when they no longer want to discuss something with someone, or even with anyone.
That has very little to do with what I said but I agree. The thing is the left rarely desires to have a thoughtful discussion about anything thats why I smash most of them in the mojth here. I have very little regard for most of the leftists on this site.

I think there's some wiggle room to find some agreements, but I also think it takes time. I hear you about the massiveness of the thread though. I'm currently taking a little break from it while I respond to posts here :-p.
Not with people who don't think they could be wrong.

That's not just wrong it's retarded

Prove it. Please don't say something juvenile like, we just have to read your posts. Copy and paste where I've apologized for trump. Do you know what be specific means dick mouth?

Your track record of posts prove it, cunt. And every fucking sane person on this forum knows it, MAGAT.

And no, cunt, I’m not going to waste my time trudging through your fucking cultist texts to placate you.

You’ve already been awarded the Stupidest Motherfucker on the Forum and continue to prove it with your ignorance of what an apologist is.

Fucking moron.

I'm actually ok with people being unwilling to consider they might be wrong, as long as they're polite about it.
yes. it's a problem when people are unwilling to consider they are wrong and are impolite and censorious about it.

the lockdowns, mandatory injections, and censorship about different points of view about the vaccine and virus came close to destroying the country.

just as the libertarians ready to kill people over protecting fascism are quite terrifying.

where were you on vaccine/covid information censorship?

Trump Derangement Syndrome is a terminal, incurable condition.

Your line reminded me of a line from one of Star Wars' Yoda's more pessimistic lines of thought:
"Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny"

Ofcourse, anyone who's seen the original trilogy knows that Vader proved him wrong in the end.

I have to couch that by saying that I've never been a fan of Trump- I just don't think that everything he's done has been bad.

I'm glad to hear that you don't "fit the description", as it were. Out of curiosity, why are you opposed to homosexual marriage?

I think you're stereotyping those on the left. I think that a leftist like Chris Hedges does quite a good job at understanding some of the root causes for the right's support of Trump. I think this article he wrote shortly after Trump's win in the last federal election is evidence of this:

In these days of intense political divisions in the U.S. and elsewhere, it can be pretty hard to have civilized rational discussions on why the various sides disagree withi each other. Yet I think those discussions are the only real way forward.

I think there's some wiggle room to find some agreements, but I also think it takes time.
Not with people who don't think they could be wrong.

I think that people here, on both the left and the right, have the capacity of admitting they could be wrong about some things. But in order to tap into that capacity, I think that civilized discussions have to take place. The more discussions start turning into insult fests, the less I see that happening.
