“ICE is running around the Loop harassing people for not being white,” Pritzker said earlier this week during a press conference alongside Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Just a year ago, that was illegal in the United States. Now, ICE is making it commonplace. That’s not making America great.”
The governor’s remarks came after masked federal agents arrived in downtown Chicago last weekend, part of what the Trump administration has called “Operation Midway Blitz” — a surge of immigration enforcement targeting undocumented individuals. The operation has led to hundreds of arrests, many of which, according to Pritzker, involve people with no criminal convictions.
“Sixty percent of the individuals that ICE has taken in Illinois this year have no criminal convictions of any kind,” Pritzker said.
Federal officials say the operation is aimed at removing “the worst of the worst” criminal immigrants. But Pritzker and other Illinois leaders argue the tactics are authoritarian and racially discriminatory.
“If federal agents march down busy streets, harassing civilians and demanding their ‘papers,’ what would we say?” Pritzker asked. “I don’t think we’d have any trouble calling it what it is: authoritarianism.”
The governor’s comments follow reports that Border Patrol agents have been arresting people based on appearance. Gregory Bovino, a top border official, told reporters that agents consider “how they look” when deciding whom to detain.
