GOP wins House seat in Obama's home district

HONOLULU – Republican Charles Djou (duh-JOO') has won a Democratic-held House seat in Hawaii in the district where President Barack Obama grew up.

The special election is the latest triumph for the GOP as it looks to take back control of Congress.

Djou's victory was also a blow to Obama and other Democrats who could not rally around a candidate and find away to win a congressional race that should have been a cakewalk. The seat had been held by a Democrat for nearly 20 years and is located in the district where Obama was born and spent most of his childhood.

i can't wait for party hacks like nigel to explain this...afterall....when mccain wins, running on an anti obama/pelosi/reid platform because then....a democrat wins the same district/area....it matters....notwithstanding....that the democrat ran, NOT, on an anti obama/pelosi/reid platform....but pretty much ran on a republican/mccain platform....

That's funny; when I saw this in the news, I thought "I can't wait for party hacks like Yurt to try to make a big deal about this."

Isn't that ironic?

BTW, George Bush got 47% of the vote in this district in 2004. The cook partisan index rating was an extremely high D+11, which fits my "only held because of the incumbency effect" theory nicely. Also, it looks like there was vote splitting.

I'm surprised that Yurt left some key, and critical information out of his post.

It was a three-way race: one republican versus two democrats. The dems split the center-left votes.

Finally tally:

Democratic candidates won 58.4% of the vote
Republican candidate won 39.4% of the vote.

aka, the democratic vote outperformed the republican vote by 20 percent.

Interestingly, the more liberal democrat won the plurality of the center-left vote.

So, bottom line is that this republican is going to get totally blown out in this district this November when it's a head to head race against only one democrat. And presumably, it will be the more liberal democrat, the one who won the center-left plurality that is going to take the seat in november.

Had this been ONE Democrat vs One Republican Yurt would never have even posted about the Hawaii election. This election was to fill a vacancy until November and as many people as wanted to run and only a plurality was needed to win.

Hooray.

lmao...thanks for showing once again what a hack you are...you make a big deal about dem winning where mccain won when the dem ran essentially on a mccain platform and not an obama/pelosi/reid platform

you're priceless

Really....?

Its ironic that when Jarod raved and bragged and made a big deal about some Dem. winning an election a couple of weeks ago....you didn't mention he was a party hack having an orgasm about it....
Must have slipped your little mind....
