From the Boston Massacre, where federal troops fired on angry protesters to the Declaration of Independence America transitioned to an independent nation.

War followed and we had to fight to remove the tyranny of King George.

The beautiful result is our Republic, using Democracy to elect our leaders.

Clearly the issue of slavery plagued the young nation, and we we had to strive to make America better and better. The fight continues as America continues to make progress toward greatness.

Thank you to our forefathers and foremothers. Let’s continue the fight for greatness. Always making tomorrow greater than yesterday.

God bless America!

It’s important to remember that the Fourth of July does not represent freedom for many modern Americans. Black Americans were enslaved for almost 100 yearsafter 1776.

The majority of nations emerging from the British Commonwealth,
like Canada and Australia, for example, emerged far more civilized
then we who chose revolution.

Do as you like. I'm passing on any celebrating today.

America probably has the most magnificent and bountiful tract of real estate on our planet.
It certainly has by far the most powerful military
(at the expense of other important things going woefully underfunded, unfortunately).

At one time, at least, America may have had the greatest potential of all time for an unprecedented historical greatness.

But unequivocally and irrefutably,
America has far, far, far too great a percentage
of morally and intellectually deficient citizens to be a great nation.
As a microcosm, this forum alone demonstrates that.

Other nations have done a lot more with a lot less
and thus made themselves a better place to live.
That can only result from having an adequate percentage of good people.
We fall short, and we're seeing it most clearly now.

True, but then Black American men had the right to vote for 50 years before all American women. It's not perfect, but it's getting better....until MAGA.

It also marked a bad sign and the beginning of a lack of independence for western indigenous people people
There world has always had abuse, murder and slavery. It's written across all human history. To blame it all on the European colonization of Africa and the American continents is to wear blinders to human history.

FWIW, the English colonization of the North American continent showed more enlightenment than the Spanish conquest of South and Central America. Not perfect, but certainly more enlightened despite the fact both were Christian in religion.

Not any different than the European world which also had abuse murder and slavery. I’m not blaming it all on anyone. Just should recognize that it’s true.

Not just the Euros, but all of Africa and all other continents. The "indigenous people" were just as brutal with murders, rapes and slaves. It's human nature, not any particular "race" or culture.

It was, but in an organized society with rules that nature largely curtails that.

Without fair rules, that nature comes out.
