Trump Executive Order renames Gulf of Mexico

Does anyone have the "power" to rename something? They don't...but they do.... No one is all powerful... People often complain when the name changes... some like it some don't... You can call it anything you want... I still Say Cleveland Indians... All my gear says Indians... I'm not buying new stuff...;)
There are international treaties on the naming of geographic features not within the borders of nations, those treaties spell out how the signatories of the treaties name things like the Gulf of Mexico.

You can call it anything you want to call it, but its not what the international community calls it. Its not what appears on maps.

We'll see about that, won't we, Brad?

One of Trump's first actions was to attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.

(b) As such, within 30 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of the Interior shall, consistent with 43 U.S.C. 364 through 364f, take all appropriate actions to rename as the “Gulf of America” the U.S. Continental Shelf area bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba in the area formerly named as the Gulf of Mexico.

What a waste of time and money. The EO also calls for replacing everyone appointed to U.S. Board on Geographic Names within 7 days.

I'm surprised he hasn't designated that the government create a US Board of Food Names so that he can rename French Fries to Freedom Fries.
What waste??? So it's called the Gulf of America. Big hairy deal. If anything, it's a more appropriate name.

Actually pretty comical, so now are all the textbooks used in the US going to be recalled and reprinted? Think of all the tourist signage in Florida that directs people. The MAGA locals who are now going to get into petty arguements when others refer to as Gulf of Mexico. Not to mention the world certainly isn’t going to waste time and money rebranding a body of water. It’s just too funny

Only Trump could turn a body of water into a political controversy
What's the controversy? The name has changed, that's all.

The problem isn't my map. The problem is that all US documents that reference the Gulf will need to be rewritten and republished.
Did you know the CFR is updated and republished on a quarterly basis already??
The Board shall provide guidance to ensure all federal references to the Gulf of America, including on agency maps, contracts, and other documents and communications shall reflect its renaming.

How many millions of dollars are going to be wasted on this petty act?
The debt is currently $36 TRILLION and you're worried about a million dollars???
It won't cost a million dollars to update such references and the CFR.

U.S. navigational charts are updated every 90 days anyway. If you want to use an outdated chart, feel free, but it's your risk.

The CFR and all maps and charts are already updated on a regular basis and republished. Meh.

You do know that printed maps are becoming less common, don't you?

HEIL!
Street maps are becoming less common. Navigational charts are still used by sailors and pilots. Those charts don't need batteries or a power supply of any kind to view them.

Modern navigational systems have largely moved away from dependence on printed maps. Here's a breakdown of how navigation has evolved:

  • GPS and Digital Maps: Most modern navigation is based on GPS (Global Positioning System) technology, which uses satellites to determine the exact location of a device. This data is then overlaid on digital maps provided by services like Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Waze. These digital maps are updated regularly to reflect changes in road infrastructure, traffic patterns, and other navigational data.
  • Real-Time Information: Digital navigation systems offer real-time traffic updates, route optimization based on current conditions, and the ability to reroute if there are disruptions like road closures or accidents. This capability far surpasses what printed maps can offer.
  • User Interaction: Modern systems allow for user input, such as searching for specific locations, saving favorite places, and receiving voice-guided directions, which are features not possible with printed maps.
  • Offline Capabilities: While digital maps typically require internet access, many apps now offer downloadable maps for offline use, which somewhat mimics the availability of a printed map but with the added benefits of digital technology.

What do the words "agency maps" mean to you?

"Agency maps" refer to visual representations or diagrams that outline the various agencies, their roles, responsibilities, and sometimes their interactions within a specific system or context. Here's a detailed explanation:

  1. Government Context: In government settings, agency maps are often used to depict the organizational structure of different government agencies. They show how these agencies relate to each other, their hierarchy, and the scope of their jurisdiction or services. For example, in the U.S., an agency map might illustrate how departments like the Department of Health and Human Services interact with the Environmental Protection Agency in policy-making or implementation.
  2. Business and Corporate: In business, agency maps can illustrate the relationship between different marketing or advertising agencies and the company they serve. This includes mapping out who handles what aspects of marketing (like creative, media buying, digital strategy, etc.), showing the flow of communication and responsibility.
  3. Project Management: Here, agency maps might be used in project planning to clarify which team or department is responsible for different parts of a project. This helps in managing resources, setting expectations, and ensuring accountability.
  4. IT and Systems: In IT or systems architecture, agency maps can represent how different software or operational systems interact, showing data flow, responsibility for updates, maintenance, or security.
  5. Education and Research: In academic or research environments, these maps could show the collaboration between different research groups, funding agencies, or educational institutions, detailing partnerships, project scopes, or shared resources.
  6. Healthcare: Agency maps in healthcare might show the relationships between different healthcare providers, regulatory bodies, and insurance agencies, highlighting pathways for patient care, regulatory compliance, or health policy implementation.

  • Visual Format: These maps can vary in format but commonly include:
    • Flowcharts for showing processes or workflows.
    • Organizational charts for hierarchical structures.
    • Network diagrams for showing interconnections or dependencies.
    • Mind maps for brainstorming or conceptual mapping of agency functions.
  • Purpose:
    • Clarity: To provide a clear understanding of who does what.
    • Efficiency: To improve operational efficiency by reducing redundancy or overlap.
    • Accountability: To establish clear lines of responsibility.
    • Communication: To enhance communication between different agencies or departments.

If you're looking for examples or need more specific information about agency maps in a particular field, let me know, and I can search for more tailored content or examples.

enormous waste of money. and has no effect on inter n national usage and maps. Just means a bunch of books and maps, etc., in the US will have to be revised and reprinted st the taxpayer expense. so much for DOGE
Privately made maps are not made at taxpayer expense.
Books not written by the U.S. government are not made at taxpayer expense.

Charts and maps published by the U.S. government are updated approximately every 90 days anyway.
