House Renews Patriot Act

WASHINGTON -- The House of Representatives reauthorized the Patriot Act for one year Thursday.

The vote was 315-97 .

Many liberals in the House opposed the controversial act, saying it tramps Constitutional protections and civil liberties.

Congress adopted the Patriot Act shortly after September 11th.

Many lawmakers wanted to rewrite or even kill some of the most controversial provisions in the act. But Congressional leaders didn’t have the appetite for a major battle with the economy and health care reform swinging in the balance.

Many of the renewed provisions involve wiretaps and eavesdropping measures.

The Senate ok'd the package earlier this week. President Obama is expected to sign the bill into law.

When Bush signed it, you would have thought the end of the world was coming, now that we have a democrat running the show, not a peep from any of them.

Its funny that the people who screamed about this being a violation of constitutional rights, and claimed this was proof George W. ignored the US Constitution, are silent now.

If the Patriot Act trampled on our rights when Bush was in office, it tramples our right when Obama is in office.

This is partisan bullshit at its best.

And what is really strange, these same pinheads don't see themselves as hypocrites...

It boggles the brain....

Obviously you weren't reading left wing websites back in September when this particular reauthorization first came up. Many of us liberals didn't like the act starting in 2001, and through all its evolutions since.

And for the record Fox got it wrong. Obama signed reauthorization of three provisions out of the hundreds in it.

"President Barack Obama today signed into law legislation that would temporarily extend three controversial Patriot Act provisions that had been set to expire tomorrow."

Try telling our flock of willfully ignorant neocon parrots that the so called "liberal" MSM seems to continually IGNORE people like Amy Goodman, or Noam Chomsky, or Tom Hartman, etc., etc. I seriously doubt they've even heard of WBAI or similar stations carried by Pacifica Broadcasting. Hell, even the local station here that carried Air America STILL carries a majority of the syndicated broadcasts after AA bit the dust...then there's a station that broadcasts out of Buffalo, NY that carries Progressive programming.

Yep, people with their ear to the ground and who didn't have their head up the collective asses of the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh new this was coming and voiced dissent. The Patriot Act was wrong then, and it's wrong now.

What I find fascinating is how our parrots seem to have no problem with the Bill of Rights bending power of the Patriot Act in the hands of an "arrogant" foreign born socialist like Obama.

Good catch on what was actually signed by Obama. But I still don't like it.

You must have had to look hard to find a story that wrote the word "temporarily"

Fox did not get it wrong, he signed it, he now owns it.

Why the hell has no one, myself included, ever heard of WBAI???

Because they're one of the few (if not the only) totally non-commercial, listener sponsored radio station/programming on the FM dial.....so that means they're not tied into a conglomerate that has cross promotions on it's TV station/print ownings. They've been around for about 50 years.

I do listen to c89.5 FM, but its a music station.

Being non-commercial IMNSHO, is irrelevant, btw, except that on a music station like c89.5 its nice because there are no commericals, only public service announcements, updates about Nathan Hale High School, and money drive campaigns.

You're incorrect with regards to your "irrelevent" statement. A radio station which provides national and international news coverage, social/cultural commentary, analysis, etc. that DOES NOT have corporate sponorship or "commercial advertising" of any kind despite it's national affiliates will ONLY be noticed by it's local listenership.....and no matter how effective that programming is, it will be ignored to some extent by the MSM. Case in point: the ONLY time Pacifica Broadcasting (WBAI's parent company) got national attention is when the GOP under Gingrich's leadership questioned it's programming policies during Slick Willy's signing of the Telecommunications Act.

touchie, you don't really avoid getting a reputation for being a repetitive hack by just linking your previous statements instead of going through the steps of cutting and pasting them......

Stop babbling, man! Bravo makes an moronic statement, so rather than waste time I just link him to a response/statement that demonstrates the flaws in his statement.

Instead of wasting time taking personal pot shots at me, you should spend more time discussing the issue and the points I raise.....makes you look less of a neocon parrot with an axe to grind.

Now, that being said, are you okay with the Bill of Rights/Constitution bending Patriot Act powers in the hand of what the neocon driven GOP punditry decribes as Obama's socialist agenda?
