Try putting yourself in the mindset of 2007. Barack Obama was an interesting but ultimately doomed outsider candidate whose main selling point was that he voted “no” on the Iraq invasion. Social media was a frivolous diversion for college students. Donald Trump was a gameshow host. I was a lefty!

In 2007, sixteen years ago, John McWhorter and I had our first conversation, and I wanted to revisit it to examine just how much—or how little—things had changed. In our conversation (you can watch the whole thing here), I sometimes seem to play the role of the experienced black progressive taking a young colleague to task for his conservatism. I thought I knew whereof I spoke. John had published two books—Losing the Race and Winning the Race—that cut against the conventional wisdom in black intellectual circles, and he did so from what seemed to me to be a right-of-center perspective. I had been there before, when I was an outspoken black conservative in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Since that time, I had managed to convince myself that I had changed my ways and come “back home” politically, to where all right-minded black people belonged.

Well, sixteen years is a long time. In this clip, we watch our younger selves debate whether America is really ready to “move beyond race.” It sounds almost quaint now. As I remark below, Obama’s presidency seemed to offer us just such an opportunity, and it was squandered. I haven’t given up hope that the transracial humanism I then espoused could one day become the common sense of the nation. I think it’s the only way out of our current mess. But listening back, I’m struck by how much closer we seemed to that ideal in 2007 than we do in 2023.

The lie you have to sell is that the Antebellum South was "conservative."

The South was run by a small group of Oligarchs - George Soros, Tim Cook types of their day. Like the democrat Oligarchs of today, the government served the will of the Oligarchs then. Now democrats are poorly educated and have zero knowledge of history. The Nazi democrat fable is that "all whites are oppressors and had slaves." It's bullshit of course, less than 5% of white people owned slaves in the Antebellum South. Slaves were concentrated on large plantations owned by the Oligarchs. Did I mention that the plantations (no word if they were named "Facebook" or "Apple") owned the governments of the states they were in? Just like the democrats today...

Now one of the lies you democrats LOVE to tell is that the Oligarchs were advocates of "states rights." But then there is the whole "fugitive slave act" thing. Compelling free states to act as agents of slave states against their will is hardly promoting sovereign states. But as I said - democrats are fucking liars - they were then - they are now. democrats never change.

Another lie leftist vermin like to tell is that the Antebellum democrats "supported property rights." Another lie of course. Consider the "small holder act" in Georgia, that allowed plantations to seize by force any farm under 100 acres. Property theft by democrat oligarchs is the opposite "property rights."

So what have we learned? Well you probably haven't learned anything - democrats in general are not capable of learning.

But lurkers have learned that democrats in the old south were big government thugs who imposed their will on other states and who had contempt for private property and property rights - just like democrats today.
