How Hot Is the Sea Off Florida Right Now? Think 90s Fahrenheit.

Florida’s coral reefs are facing what could be an unprecedented threat from a marine heat wave that is warming the Gulf of Mexico, pushing water temperatures into the 90s.

The biggest concern for coral isn’t just the current sea surface temperatures in the Florida Keys, even though they are the hottest on record. The daily average surface temperature off the Keys on Monday was just over 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32.4 Celsius), according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The real worry, scientists say, is that it’s only July. Corals typically experience the most heat stress in August and September.

We’re entering uncharted territories,” said Derek Manzello, an ecologist and the coordinator of NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch program.

Coral reefs are natural wonders that support myriad species and blunt damage from storms. In the United States, reefs generate economic benefits to the tune of $3.4 billion annually for fisheries, tourism and coastal protection, according to NOAA.

Marine heat isn’t just affecting the Gulf of Mexico. Globally, about 40% of the planet is experiencing a marine heat wave, according to Dillon Amaya, a physical scientist at NOAA who studies them.

“Florida is one patch in a terrible quilt right now,” Amaya said.

In Key West, beachgoers expressed surprise at the warmth of the ocean, comparing it to bath water.

In the movie "Soylent Green" it points out that the "seas are dying".

Anyone care for crackers?

That means nothing to rightys. The temperature is over 90 for 70 percent of America. That is unheard of. We are busting the highest temps in many places.

They don't care about their children and grandchildren either because they are selfish assholes or stupid.

My grandfather would be proud about folks talking about the weather. He used to leave the weather channel on all the time when I was a kid even when I would beg for MTV or ESPN.

California expected to cook under large 'heat dome'

Temperatures are forecast to soar in California this weekend, rising above 120 degrees in the most extreme cases and potentially breaking a few all-time record highs. This is the Golden State’s second heat wave of the summer, and it’s expected to be more severe — lasting longer and bringing higher temperatures — than the one earlier in the season, meteorologists said.

“We have a heat risk index, and it’s forecasting extreme values for many of those hot spots in Southern California, particularly on Sunday,” said Zack Taylor, a forecaster with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Weather Prediction Center. “The kind of duration and the intensity we’re forecasting is going to be deadly, especially for those who are more vulnerable and who haven’t acclimated to these types of high temperatures.”

The warmup comes to the Golden State, especially its southern half, as a heat dome builds over the U.S. Southwest and West. A heat dome is an area of high pressure in the atmosphere associated with warming. By contrast, low pressure brings cooling. The high pressure acts as a lid, trapping the heat near the Earth’s surface.

“When we start seeing widespread daily records and more significant impacts and excessive heat warnings, that’s when we start to characterize a ridge of high pressure as a heat dome,” Taylor explained. “We don’t have an official definition.”

The ridge is expected to brush California with its edge on Thursday and Friday, and by Saturday and Sunday, its center is forecast to be directly over Las Vegas and Southern California. In fact, Las Vegas could break its all-time highest temperature ever recorded of 117 degrees on Saturday, Sunday or Monday, Taylor said.

Afternoon highs across Southern California on Friday through Monday are expected to mostly be in the 100s, reaching as high as 115 to 120 in inland areas, Taylor said. The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat watch for interior Los Angeles County from Wednesday through Sunday and for Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties Thursday through Sunday.

The most extreme heat should hit desert areas such as Palm Springs and the Mojave Desert. The hottest locations could see temperatures over 125; Death Valley is forecast to hit 127 on Saturday, 129 on Sunday and 128 on Monday. Death Valley’s all-time record high is 134 degrees, recorded on July 10, 1913.

California’s Central Valley is expected to see temperatures ranging from 105 to 115 over the weekend and the weather service issued excessive heat watches for both the northern and southern portions of the valley.

In the northern Sacramento Valley, Redding is forecast to hit a high of 110 on Friday, 114 on Saturday and 113 on Sunday. To the south, in the San Joaquin Valley, Hanford and Fresno could both break all-time record highs of 116 and 115 respectively, the weather service said.

“It’s just going to feel hot,” said David Spector, a forecaster who works in the weather service’s Hanford office. “When we have heat like this, the best thing to do is stay in an air-conditioned area.”

Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area should be cooler than the southern half of the state but still unseasonably hot. The Bay Area has an excessive heat watch in effect Friday through Sunday, with 70s forecast at the coast and 90s to 100s expected inland.

“Some of the hottest spots will see temperatures up to 110 — that’s up toward Lake Berryessa and in northern Napa and Sonoma counties,” said Dalton Behringer, a forecaster with the weather service’s Bay Area office.

As with other parts of the state, the Bay Area is expected to see more severe heat with this event compared to the last one, when fog rolled in at night, keeping the coast cool. In the upcoming warmup, overnight temperatures will likely be warmer than they were in early July, with little fog in the forecast, Behringer said. For example, in the last heat event, the North Bay saw daytime highs in the 90s to low 100s with overnight highs in the 50s. In this next warmup, daytime highs again could be in the 90s to triple-digits, but overnight highs are expected to be in the 60s.

“This time you’re not going to see that quick relief like we normally do,” he said. “Places we usually see the marine layer come in, they may not get any fog this time.”

Climate cannot change. Climate has no temperature. There is no such thing as a global climate.

What a joke.

Water temperature in the Keys is always warm.

The average since we've been tracking it is 86 degrees for July.

Today it will be 88, it has never been over 90 in recorded history.

Stupid yahoo news is trying to make this a story when it's completely normal for this time of year.

Don't tell them that we are currently in an ice age and are working our way out of it so of course it's going to warm.

The earth is not in it's normal state right now which is usually much warmer.

This has happened many times in the past and will happen again in the future.

That info exists and the data is clear. That is exactly what climate scientists do. You would not accept it. You certainly have not accepted the science so far.
