Yes, the perpetrator and the victim would normally be witnesses. That is how reality works. We might have a he said/he said situation, but actually might have an agreement on the basic facts of the case: a Black teen rang a doorbell, and was shot.

So a kid picking up his brothers would break into the house that he believes his brothers are in by ringing the front doorbell? That does not pass the laugh test.

Clearly the kid was picking up his brothers, which is not a crime. He rang the front doorbell, which is not a crime. And he was shot, which is a crime. You are desperate to blame the Black teen, but it is 100% the white old guy.

There is no evidence for any of that. It's something the thug made up after he was shot during his breakin attempt.

He's 85 years old. Even a 3 year sentence could be a life sentence. Take his guns away, forbid him to have one, sentence him to home arrest for 15 years. Any more trouble and he'll go to prison.

We are a country that sentences 18 year olds to life without parole, so why not sentence an 85 year old to life without parole? Who is more likely to reform their lives, an 18 year old, or an 85 year old? Or put another way, that 18 year old will one day be a 85 year old who will have to spend the rest of his life in prison for something he did 67 years before.
