The closed shop was made illegal many moons ago in the UK.
Well, they are still legal in some states in the US, and Michigan just returned to that standard.

Right to work is a catchphrase whose real motive is to weaken unions.
I don't think someone should be able to accept employment at a union shop, reap the benefit from union wages and benefits that were negotiated by union reps and Union lawyers, but then be able to bow out of paying union dues.
If unions are so terrible, why do corporations need government to keep people from joining them?
and let another employer fuck me over without union representation and protection.
If unions were worth what they demand in dues, people would willingly join them. When workers see the union as worthless, they don't want to pay and that in turn forces the union to get the government to make laws forcing membership.
it's a principle totally in line with American short-sightedness.
Stuff made abroad is cheaper...
but now you don't have an income to spend on it.
Do you want to know the truth, AssHat?
American-style democracy and capitalism both have no capability to fix themselves when they get this fucked up.
When it gets bad enough, totalitarianism and communism could end up being the only alternative for survival.
Thank the founders for not doing a better job writing our constitution.
Wrong question. Right-to-work gives the worker an option to join or not join as their personal decision. The union gets the government to make laws forcing membership (closed shop). The real question is, Why do unions have to force membership if their benefits are so valuable?
Prior to government interference unions could enforce contracts that required every employee to belong to the union. Right-to-work laws were the laws where the government was interfering with the employee/employer contract. Employers demanded right to work laws to weaken the unions and prevent them from having contracts requiring all employees be a member of the union.
Right to work should be a fundamental right forWhy should the union be able to force a worker the employer hired to be a member? That's no different from 'closed shop' laws.

A day in the life of Joe Republican
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.
All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joes employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union.
If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
Its noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.
Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.
He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.
Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.
Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."
Years ago my first car out of college was a new red Trans Am. Just so happened a supervisor at the Firestone plant had one exactly like mine. To my knowledge it was the only other red Trans Am car in my small town. About 6 months after I bought my car Firestone went on a lengthy strike. After that I had my car keyed with the word scab and tires slashed and later had it egged. If unions are such a great deal why do they have to do things like that.
Also I have a friend who is an IT expert. He was upper management for a company that sells intra-operative EMG machines that does emgs during neuro surgery and the results are interpreted via the internet real time. Anyway my friend was setting up a booth at a Chicago trade show. His company had to pay a union worker to WATCH him set up his booth then he had to pay a union electrician to plug in his machine to a standard outlet. Then he had to pay a union guy to plug his machine into the internet. That is why people hate unions.
You forgot to mention, he also had to pay the company running the tradeshow just for the floor space to set up his booth. What he paid the union guys was peanuts compared to what he paid for a 10' x 20' piece of concrete for 4 days.
He probably paid $40,000 for the floor space and $300 for 3 union guys. Why would he hate union guys more than corporations? Not only that, the corporation probably got $175 of the money he paid for the 3 union guys.
That's why they're referred to as 'union thugs' by those not in them.Years ago my first car out of college was a new red Trans Am. The right wing voters are the dumbest fucks walking
those workers wont be working in the "gig economy"Those workers will now earn larger wages, along with benefits. How does that qualify for "fucking"?
