Jimmy Carter is in his last days.

Carter was prescient on the need to wean ourselves off foreign oil, energy efficiency, and to develop alternatives. America's reliance of foreign oil has arguably been America's most significant Achilles heel.

The Camp David agreement ranks in the upper tier of presidential foreign policy accomplishments, a major achievement of diplomatic skill, and a hugely successful foreign policy accomplishment. Egypt has never attacked Israel, or vice versa, in the half century since Camp David.

But my favorite thing about Jimmy Carter was he brought a vision of moral clarity to the American presidency that no one before him had ever done. He elevated human rights and human dignity as a core value in our foreign policy.

Prior to Carter, presidential foreign policy was largely based on a cynical Cold War calculation that no matter how evil a foreign leader was, as long as they were anti-communist we were going to back them to the hilt. And in that way, Carter ultimately changed the nature of the American presidency for all time. Ronald Reagan would have totally gotten away with covertly funding a civil war in Nicaragua, and giving tacit support to rightwing death squads in El Salvador, if Carter had not made the nation take stock of how our values and morality were intersecting with our foreign policy.
Carter was actually one of the most consequential presidents of the last half century.

Before his Post-Watergate reforms, people just accepted government secrecy and lack of accountability in our national security apparatus. Now we just accept as a matter of routine that there has to be some oversight and accountability of our national security agencies.

And now we just accept by default that human rights considerations are going to be a part of our foreign policy calculations.

That is directly part of Carter's legacy. There aren't that many presidents who leave a tangible lasting legacy that persists decade after decade.

Jimmy Carter, at 98 the oldest living former president, has chosen to spend his final days at home in Plains, Ga., in hospice care after a series of brief hospital stays, the Carter Center announced Saturday.

Carter “has the full support of his family and his medical team," the center’s statement said of the decision it said the nearly century-old one-time peanut farmer and engineer who became the United States’ 39th president for one term from 1977 to 1981.

This is very sad. He is a great man.

He was far far better than the last piece of dreck who inhabited the WH. Jimmy is a decent, honest man, which cant be said about Trump.
The last POS pResident to occupy the White House is still living there. Biden has displaced Carter as the worst President in the last 75 years.

A BIG difference is Carter is a good man and Biden is a POS.

I’m so thankful Biden will be president at his funeral instead of the guy Biden beat.

Carter was nothing but pure good with a golden heart. You can disagree about his presidency (I think he was good and got blamed for Nixon/Ford’s mess) but you can’t disagree about how purely golden his heart is.

He could always claim to be good as he used rotweiler Zbigniew Brzezinski, his Security Advisor to do his dirty work. Afghanistan is the way it is due to them, they started the mujahideen to fuck with the Russians.

Brzezinski was in the main correct....about both what was happening and what mattered.
