They are mostly Seattle based. The warehouses are fully automated and that staff is still packing stuff pretty damn fast. Amazon is investing in new warehouses as well. That also means staffing them.

They are a tech company. All online retail is. Someone has to build and maintain the website, the catalog, the order handling system, shipping coordination, etc. Amazon also runs their website in multiple languages. A lot of that is done in Seattle by people who know that language.
In addition, Amazon invented the cloud. AWS is the most extensive set of cloud servers available. That's all tech work. The Amazon website itself runs on AWS.
They also created and maintain the Alexa service. They have no intention of abandoning it. It also runs on AWS.
These are primarily white-collar jobs. The S&P will take a big hit causing waves in the entire economy. Predictions are for fools but the Greater Depression before the 2024 election is a good bet.

We are already in a depression. We have been since Democrats shut down the economy over Covid19 fear mongering. Amazon made this announcement after a terrible Christmas season.
People aren't buying at Amazon because they are going to other retailers, people are simply not buying. They have their budgets full just trying to keep food on the table (and keep the table and house that it's in!).
All retailers are seeing reduced activity, not just Amazon.
