Newly released records show top DeSantis adviser used private email and alias to coordinate migrant flights

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ top safety official helped write language that helped a former legal client secure a state contract to oversee a controversial program to fly migrants from the southern border to Martha’s Vineyard.

In the process, the official, Larry Keefe, used a non-public email address that made it appear that emails were coming from “Clarice Starling,” the main character from “The Silence of the Lambs” novel.

The newly released records show that Keefe, who served as a U.S. Attorney in the Trump administration, used encrypted messaging apps and a private email address from “Clarice Starling” when communicating with James Montgomerie, CEO of Vertol Systems, a Destin, Fla.-based company the administration paid at least $1.5 million to coordinate the migrant flights. They also show Keefe helping Vertol, who he represented when in private legal practice, draft invoice language the company used when submitting its proposal to the Florida Department of Transportation.

The bizarre twist in the ongoing saga was revealed in records released by the DeSantis administration last Thursday, just days before the holiday weekend. The records were first reported by NBC6 . They shed light on the layers of secretive steps the DeSantis administration was taking when coordinating the flights, which included sending about 50 mostly Venezuelan asylum-seekers from the southern border to Martha’s Vineyard in mid-September. Additional flights to Delaware, the home state of President Joe Biden, were planned, but never occurred.

“This appears to be a purposeful attempt to evade Florida’s public records laws. It’s not surprising that the Governor’s office wanted to keep these records secret because they suggest that a public official helped draft a bid by a private company for government services,” said Ben Wilcox, co-founder of Integrity Florida, a nonprofit government watchdog. “That’s bid-rigging and it’s potentially illegal.”

Nothing to see here. Move along.

They knew what they were doing was illegal, which is why they did illegal things to cover it up.

How was it illegal?

Falsely identifying themselves as federal agents, transporting people to places they do not wish to go, disrupting court schedules...

They claimed they were federal agents and that people with court dates did not need to go to their court dates. They told people they would be transported to Boston, where new court dates would be setup, but instead brought them to Martha's Vineyard, which is difficult to get to a court from. There was a huge amount of fraud involved with all this.

What happens to people who falsely identify as "federal agents"? Other than that, there was no fraud...and the incident helped to point out that all are Not welcome to Martha's Vineyard...false advertising there, for sure....;)

Dutch recently falsely claimed to be a federal officer but we knew better and laughed at him and the clown car.

You tell people you their court date has been cancelled, they are going to Boston, and getting a new court date and jobs there. Then you take them to Martha's Vineyard?

It is at the very least contempt of court. Technically it is also kidnapping.

You don't know what they were told...but since you're following this so closely...where are they now?

It's seems to be just great when elected Republicans use private email accounts, but for a democrat like Hillary Clinton, its cause for imprisonment. There is a list, and not a short one, of member of trumps administration who also used private email.

What happens when people falsely identify as federal agents, representatives, officers, etc.? ( I understand that you're still disappointed that "not Hillary" was necessary...)

So far every piece of evidence points to that they were lied to. None of the story makes any sense unless they were lied to.

It is a weak case when you say, "maybe everything is a lie, and everyone is acting in a bizarre way."

They weren't lied to...they were homeless...what would they have done if they hadn't chosen the option to go? Where are they now? Better question...Why didn't Martha's (everyone is welcome here) Vineyard accept them and work with them...there were 50 people...a very workable number...

Individuals interviewed gave an account of what they were told and promised. A lawyer interviewed them when they were in Massachusetts, so we do know what they were told.

We know what the lawyer wrote down.... We also know what illegals practice saying when they come into the country....

Wow. Can you say, "obstruction of justice"? Sure. It's just like Christie's "Bridgegate". Make someone else take the fall for your crimes.

We know what the lawyer wrote down.... We also know what illegals practice saying when they come into the country....

What an evil, racist bitch you are. While pretending to be a former school teacher. Unreal.

they were homeless.

Many had homes and families in the USA. One was apparently a US citizen. They had no desire to be moved to Martha's Vineyard, which would make it impossible to get to their court date. They had no desires to suffer to be your political pawns.

what would they have done if they hadn't chosen the option to go?

They were told that they had to go to Boston, or be deported. That was a lie. When you see people acting against their self interest, that is clue they are being lied to.

Where are they now?

Back with their families, waiting for a court date. Remember these were the easy cases. They had families in the area.

Why didn't Martha's (everyone is welcome here) Vineyard accept them and work with them...there were 50 people...a very workable number...

They were welcome, but there is no courthouse on Martha's Vineyard. Building a courthouse for 50 people makes no sense. They had to be moved to where there is a courthouse. And given they were taken from their families, they wanted to get back to their families.

Not to mention using that texting app, "Signal" to avoid detection while planning their coup.
